Out of the cup, and into your favorite dishes!

There's more to yogurt than an energizing breakfast treat or a healthy afternoon snack. As the folks at Stonyfield Farm know, yogurt is a flexible ingredient used in cooking all over the world, one just now claiming its spot in American kitchens. With its surprising versatility, creamy texture, and piquant flavor, yogurt is a lowfat alternative to sour cream, cream cheese, or vegetable oil in all types of recipes--baked goods stay moist, flavors intensify, and calories and fat content remain low.

In the Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cookbook, America's fastest-growing yogurt company presents yogurt enthusiasts and newcomers alike with over 300 recipes for Breakfast and Brunches; Breads; Fresh Fruit and Yogurt; Smoothies; Dips, Spreads, Sauces, and Dressings; Soups; Salads and Side Dishes; Main Dishes; and, of course, Desserts. It also includes sections on how yogurt is made and the importance of yogurt as a major source of nutrients.  But yogurt's health benefits will certainly not be the only reason these tempting recipes become family favorites. Who can resist Lemon Yogurt Muffins, Mediterranean Chicken Salad, Curried Shrimp and Baby Vegetables, or Chocolate Yogurt Cheesecake?

Whether it's in spicy side dishes, a savory main course, or sweet baked goods, yogurt is a sophisticated addition to any cook's repertoire--and with the Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cookbook's easy-to-follow recipes, is indispensable for wholesome and healthful cooking.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Back in 1984, Stonyfield held a contest to solicit recipes from yogurt lovers. Out of 800 submissions, 300 recipes were selected and then tested in home kitchens to weed out the terrific dishes from the ill-conceived stinkers. The result, the 1991 Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cookbook, is back in a handsome paperback edition, and the recipes today are just as good as they were when the book was first published.

Just because it's made with yogurt doesn't mean it's healthful, however: with a cup of sugar and two-thirds of a cup of butter, Pecan Orange Coffee Cake isn't exactly health food, so leave that notion at the door. These are recipes from people who like to eat, some of which are more wholesome than others. For those inclined to count calories and fat, the nutrition facts printed for each recipe make the choices simple.

Chapters are devoted to breakfasts and brunches, breads, smoothies, fresh fruit and yogurt, dips, spreads, sauces and dressings, soups, salads and side dishes, main dishes, and desserts. With this book on the shelf, you are likely to always keep a quart of yogurt in the refrigerator. And that right there is a step in the right direction. --Schuyler Ingle

5.0 out of 5 stars An innovative approach to getting your daily dose!, March 29, 2000

This review is from: Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cookbook (Paperback)
Meg Cadoux Hirshberg has put together a creative, varied, and inspiring collection of recipes, each including yogurt. She begins by telling readers why yogurt is considered to be a "miracle food", and after convincing us of the importance of yogurt in our diets, she then proceeds with the recipes, which are divided into chapters according to their category. Naturally, breakfast comes first, and these recipes were my favorites. They are easy to prepare, do not require too many ingredients or fancy equipment, and although they are not always low in fat, they do not call for refined sugar and, for the most part, have a high fiber content. There are many different variations on waffles, pancakes, and porridge. A chapter on bread boasts several different types of grains, the smoothie section is replete with new and fun ideas for bolstering your daily fruit intake, and the salads, dressings, dips, sauces, and meat dishes are all innovative and consistently delicious. Each recipe serves about three to six people and is followed by a nutritional analysis. I hope that you will enjoy this fabulous cookbook and its delectable recipes as much as I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent variety and quality of recipes, November 17, 2007

One reviewer said the author neglected good foreign cuisine, but I didn't feel that way at all. Check the "inside the book" link to see a listing of the recipes to know if it's varied enough for you. I'm glad they have recipes from American as well as foreign recipes.

The recipes are gathered from chefs all around the country. I love that there are recipes for regular plain yogurt and some specifically for thicker, yogurt cheese. (Buy the yogurt cheese maker here, it's wonderful!)

Nice clean look. Thick book. I borrowed it from my library and then came here to buy a copy for myself.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, May 29, 2000

This review is from: Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cookbook (Paperback)
I have been cooking with yogurt for many years and consider this amazingly versatile ingredient a must in my kitchen. Since I am a longtime fan of Stonyfield Farm yogurt, I was really looking forward to using this book, which I received as a gift. After trying many of the recipes, however, I regret to say that "The Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cookbook" really doesn't do justice either to Stonyfield Farm yogurt or to yogurt cookery in general. Although there are some good recipes, the majority are lacking in imagination, and the collection itself fails to take advantage of the extensive repertoire of wonderful yogurt dishes from around the world.
