Three Real Good Ones,

This review is from: 3 Stooges: Ducking They Did Go [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"Three Little Twirps" is a circus comedy, where a mad spear thrower launches multiple spears at the threesome. "Ants in the Pantry" is a case of three exterminators having to plant insects and rodents to drum up business or get canned by their evil boss (who has a nice German accent, of course.) These un-exterminators are masters at their craft, and high society gets their share of ants, moths, rats and cats. They are accepted by High Society after really entertaining them, and end up fox hunting (for a skunk!) "A Ducking They Did Go" is about three salesmen selling memberships in a phoney duck hunting club. The scene with Curly dueling a duct in a pond is my favorite out of the 3 movie shorts on this tape. But there are many more great scenes. A definite BUY!

This is an interesting collection in that each film dates from a different period in the Stooges' career. ANTS IN THE PANTRY is the earliest, a fine comedy with the Stooges as exterminators who are thoroughly prepared for the job. A-DUCKING THEY DID GO has an informal bit in which the cast harmonizes on the Stooges' vaudeville standard "Tears" ("You'll never know..."); this charming, impromptu bit is the best thing in the movie. THREE LITTLE TWIRPS is the latest and least of this assortment, with the Stooges crashing a circus. Not their best, but Curly is memorable as the bearded lady. Overall, a decent package deal, and as good an assortment as you're likely to see on television.

All 3 shorts on this tape are good--especially the last two. Larry trying to kill a mouse with a hammer, and missing, repeatedly, of course hitting Curly instead, repeatedly. The duck getting the better of Curly, repeatedly. Etc, etc

Three early shorts: THREE LITTLE TWIRPS; ANTS IN THE PANTRY; and the best of the three A-DUCKING THEY DID GO, a hilarious duck-hunters spoof that is truly Stooges. Del Lord was one of the directors.

THREE LITTLE TWIRPS is a weird short, but kind of funny. The short has about 12 minutes of good footage. The one scene I didn't like was the horse scene. The rest was pretty good, though.ANTS IN THE PANTRY is an even better short. The remake, PEST MAN WINS, is better and faster paced. But this IS a classic. Some great scenes, and a great ending. A DUCKING THEY DID GO is in my top five favorite Curly shorts. The film is hilarious from beginning to end. The ending may be the best part. The Three Stooges leap over bushes, fall down a hill, land on bucking cows, and head off. Notice that the ending is actually reused from A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN. Interestingly, the scene is much funnier here. Overall, an excellent tape, with great quality, worth adding to your collection.

THREE LITTLE ANTS DID GO,

This review is from: 3 Stooges: Ducking They Did Go [VHS] (VHS Tape)
THREE LITTLE TWIRPS (1943) - The short is a little unusual (Harry Edwards' shorts always seem to have a strange feel to them), but I like it. A lot of mayhem, and Curly and Larry's horse scene is great. The ending is especially unusual, and seems very abrupt. If the ending was better, this might've been a gem. ANTS IN THE PANTRY (1936) - Stars the boys as exterminators. Great film, with some memorable scenes (like the cat-in-the-piano gag). That piano scene is hilarious. A DUCKING THEY DID GO (1939) - Stars the boys as duck membership salesmen. A pretty good film, with some great scenes with Curly trying to shoot some ducks. What starts as a pretty good film and goes almost all the way through, disappoints at the end when the writers got lazy and reused the ending from A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN. What the heck was the point of that? It didn't even fit the rest of the short. Overall, A good collection. The visual and audio quality of the video is excellent, and I recommend this tape. |
