5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of confusion...
There is no denying that this album is absolutely fantastic, but the previous reviews are a bit misleading. Little Jackie IS Imani Coppola. It's the group name of her and partner Adam Pallin. The group name is taken from the Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam song "Little Jackie Wants To Be A Star". I know that the vocals are credited to "Little Jackie" in the CD notes , but make...

1.0 out of 5 stars Another less than stellar artist.
Bland, Poppy, psuedo-r&b style music. Nothing really creative about it. Self-Centered, shallow lyrics offer no depth to this artist.

Almost all the progressions are exactly the same. Ugh, please people, spend your money elsewhere.

The group name is taken from the Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam song "Little Jackie Wants To Be A Star". 5.0 out of 5 stars Every song on this album is a 10/10, July 26, 2008
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
I had never heard of this artist before but I am glad that I surfed the web to the right place. This is a great album. Honestly one of the best in 2008 and good music like this does not come around often. Every song on this album is a 10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart, mind, and..., August 21, 2008
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
It's pretty trite to go on and on about how an R&B singer has "sass" or "attitude". I don't need to tell you that Imani has an attitude that'd make you think thrice before crossing her. In contrast to that, though, judging by the feel-good vibe that emanates from most of her music -- nevermind how caustic the lyrics -- you can tell her main thing is having a good time and tossing aside useless inhibitions with a hearty "Screw it!"

It's not often that I give a largely electronic album this high of praise, but it's certainly deserving of it. I enjoy having these tunes play on repeat in my head -- and Imani's words and delivery make me actually think. The heart, mind, and BOOTY are all appealed to here. That's right. I just said booty.

One question, though -- why is there a huge parental advisory sticker when all the songs are very much edited?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Music Revolves Around Jackie!, July 18, 2008
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
I am not one to buy music based on something I saw on TV or a movie (that would more likely be my mom lol) but when I heard Litte Jackie perform a couple weeks back on Conan O'Brian I had this urge to check out the CD. Luckily I was able to find it,and the next day there was an almost two hour car trip on a great sunny day to slap this into the CD player and bliss out.AND WHAT A TRIP IT WAS! Almost in an INSTANT my mom and I were sining along to the music! For one this album just about REEKS of New York;this powerful, soulful singer/rapper wails away about how "nothin's got nothin on NYC"-Jackie is obviously from the same area of Brooklyn as my mom and gives a no-nonsense treatment of Imani Coppola's writing, lyrics and production. This plus the highly funkafied mix of vintage Motown,70's soul and modern hip-hop/R&B gives plenty of room for the multi instrumentalist Adam Pallin and a red hot horn section to work some groovalicious musical magic! There is no question that given the chance Little Jackie will come totally into her own as an independant artist less reliant on Imani Copolla and Adam Pallin but considering how talented both those people are Jackie has amazing taste in collaborators and if you see her videos or performances she can work the stage with her band with the same power as Tina Turner or Rufus & Chaka Khan, all the while doing the very thing that made them special;showcasing a great individual identity and a whole lot of spunk. From "The World Should Revolve Around Me" to "I Liked You Better Before" and the title track every song is great! I cannot agree more with the previous reviewer who stated that this is a very strong candidate for one of THE albums of the year and, considering I'm a person primarily devoted to the golden age of R&B and funk in the 70's and 80's this holds a proud place in my collection. And that's part of why I like this;it has strong roots in styles of the past but isn't drowning in it;the mixture of hip-hip style programming, live instrumentation and (most important) INCREDIBLY STRONG writing give this the distinction of being a great focal point for a very badly needed new form of pop/R&B as the wave of the future!

I listened to this CD on AOL's Full CD Listening Parties. Little Jackie's "The Stoop" is nothing short of brilliant. There's not a bad song here. Witty lyrics, catchy tunes, and a pitch perfect production that supports Little Jackie's dexterous rapping and singing. This is by far, one of the best CD's of 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's the fuss about Amy Winehouse?, July 15, 2008
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
Just saw Little Jackie perform in Brooklyn and the show was great. The music was swinging and the audience was actually listening to the lyrics. Try it. You won't be disappointed. Preview "The World Should Revolve Around Me," Cryin" For the Queen," "28 Butts," "LOL," and "Black Barbie."

5.0 out of 5 stars All killer, no filler, January 12, 2011
By
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
The "All killer no filler" was from iTunes All Music review, the impetus of what made me buy it. Music proves them right. Funny. Smart. Cool. Edgy but warm and rich. Happy surprises at every corner. P.S. the guy who gave it one star review has given 1 or 2 stars to all the music he reviews- apparently he only purchases albums he doesn't like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imani Coppola is immensely talented., January 23, 2010

Imani Coppola is immensely talented. This album is one of her latest incarnations. You should at least give it a listen. I think I learned of Little Jackie on YouTube. They did not get a lot of promotion which is sad. But that's what they do to the off-the-wall types. Probably just envy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul-Inspired, But More Than Neo-Soul, May 6, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
Given that singer Imani Coppola calls her out on "Cryin' for the Queen", it's inevitable that Little Jackie be compared to the current crop of neo-soul singers exemplified by Amy Winehouse. Little Jackie isn't out-of-place in that company, with an album full of songs that are heavily inspired by the soul sound of the 60s and 70s, but if I had to compare them to a contemporary it would be Lily Allen (or maybe even The Pinker Tones): Coppola's fun, sassy attitude, as well as Adam Pallin's musical programming, is more about plundering the past in the service of creating something new than paying homage.

There's plenty more in the mix, from hip hop (think Pigeon John or Handsome Boy Modeling School) to 80s-era Prince (especially on "The Kitchen"), but the end result is something more than pastiche. If there's a unifying principle, it's Coppola's intelligent sense of humor and an appealing combination of innocence and posturing. This is an upbeat, fun album that's perfect for the beach, but the songs have enough going on below the surface to still be in your playlist when fall arrives. My favorite track is probably "Liked You Better Before", but there are enough great songs here that you should buy the whole album and pick your own. Here's hoping that we hear more soon from this talented team!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow what a cool cd!!!!, November 29, 2008
This review is from: Stoop (Audio CD)
I took a chance on this album and I am so glad I did. Very catchy tunes that put you in a good mood, well worth it. If you have kids you might want to purchase the clean version if there is one. Even with the language it is worth it, if you can see past it. All in all it is a great cd to have in my collection.
