3.0 out of 5 stars Not a big difference in behavior
This is an interesting book, but has some pretty far out suggestions. One big problem, getting a young child to take fish oil and flax seed oil without spitting it back at you. Lets just say he refuses to drink orange juice now. We have been using the new diet for about a month, but I can't see that much difference, he is still bouncing off the walls most of the time.

My son has ADHD and we have struggled for years with every type of medication the doctors pushed at us. My son did not do well on any of the medications that we trialed. He became someone else, lost in his own mind. He became very agressive, alienated, depressed, not able to gain weight or sleep. I made the decision that I wanted to try something different than the medications that made my child foreign to me. Thank god that one of my friends had started seeing Dr. Bob and told me about this book. I was very skeptical at first. I remember thinking to my self that there was no way this was going to work by food modification and vitamins. A few weeks after we started the modifications to the diet I started noticing little changes. About 3 months into it I could not believe that I had my child back. He was happy again, wanting to play outside and with his friends. He could concentrate at school and was not angry or defiant anymore. He had put on about 8 pounds. Best of all he was off the medication and his body was health again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bob's Guide to Stop ADHD in 18 Days, October 30, 2006
I am so thankful that I discovered this book one and a half months ago. My 6 year old little boy has always been hyper and was having an increasingly difficult time at school. His teacher knew that we did not want to medicate him and had been trying to use behavioral charts and reward to encourage him. He was suppose to receive 4 stars a day for sitting still and listening quietly. Day after day he came home with either one or no stars. At this point I found this book. We always ate fairly healthy...but I began using more organic products. I gave him an excellent natural vitamin, magnesium and began giving him flax oil each day. Dr. Bob wrote that Omega3 has a half life of 18 days and therefore effects should be seen in that time period. Amazingly...this happened...after three weeks of flax oil...my son began receiving 4 stars...we have now had three weeks of consistent 4 star days. He is so proud and we are just amazed. Every time I go into school I now hear something positive about my little guy...he is still high energy...but it is a different level...he can control it now, and calm down when he is told and even monitor himself and behave in the way that he knows is appropriate. I just need to say thank-you Dr. Bob...your book has really changed the life of our son and our whole family!

5.0 out of 5 stars Noticed a difference in only 5 days!, November 12, 2007

My 3 year old son had been out of control for a long time. He had many symptoms of ODD. He had a short fuse and got angry easily. He always whined and wouldn't sleep through the night. Both my husband and I were at a breaking point, but knew we did NOT want to go the medication route. I always thought our family ate pretty healthy; we would limited our kids sugar/snack intake and we weren't a milk drinking family so I didn't think that my son's 'attitude' symptoms were food/mineral deficiant related. Boy, were we wrong!
While reading Dr. Bob's book I compared my son's 'symptoms' to those in the book. Dr. Bob's book has been a lifesaver! We noticed a difference in only 5 days!
We started w/ the nigtly salmon oil, added flax, changed to soy and rice milk and we are beginning to add vitamins and whole food minerals. We even started the program for all 3 my children.
This book has added a bright future for our children and has given my husband and I the peace in knowing we are actually getting to the root of the problam instead of just medicating the problem. Thanks Dr. Bob.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop the Ritalin, February 23, 2006
By

Dr Bob's Guide to Stop ADHD is too good to be true BUT it is! After reading his book a year ago and resisting the change, our eldest son's(11yrs old) school strongly encouraging us to put him on Ritalin (yes, they used the R word during the conference and even stated there are no "proven" side effects) On 1/2/06, our entire family made the change and choice to follow Dr. Bob's book. A miracle happened! Our son is focused, writing on the lines of his paper, answering questions in class and getting A's(yes, multiply A grades). Teachers have noticed the difference and told my son, which increased his self esteem. Anyone who has watched their child/children struggle with this lable of ADHD or ADD knows that self esteem is a issue and to watch your child regain their self worth is priceless!! So, yes this book really works coupled with our two times a week adjustments. Remember, just because someone has MD in their title does not mean they have all the answers. Always ask questions and know NOBODY knows your child like you do! Be confident! You can do this change even though our culture says "pop a pill". Visit www.drbob4health.com Peace :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bob's guide to stop ADHD in 18 days!, October 24, 2007
By
My 5 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. So, when I first saw the title of this book I thought it was a joke and I was hestitant about ordering it. But to my surprise it is a great book! The book does a great job of explaining (in plain english) what ADHD is, how to begin to heal the body and how important a sugar/ dairy/ gluten free diet is.
Upon his suggestion, I immediately, but graduately, changed my son's diet and found an hollistic doctor which we are currently working with. I have seen a change in his hyperactivity since removing the sugar and the fast food and he is even doing much better in school.
This book is an easy read, I read it in four days! I recommend this book to all parents!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bob's Guide to Stop ADHD in 18 days, February 4, 2006
I tried Dr. Bob's advice on my 14 year old son who was very, willing. He also was unhappy with his weight. We were able to mellow out his hyperness and he lost 20 lbs. by not eating any junk food or pop. We learned Choc. Milk &, or Choc. Ice Cream triggered him in minutes to hyper activity. It was like watching Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde. It helped him at school because we stopped the Choc Milk in the morning and at lunch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, August 16, 2005
I have a very busy three year old boy. I wouldn't consider him a.d.d., but I have had a very difficult time getting him to eat the kind of foods that will be beneficial to him. There would be major tantrums and hours spent fighting at the dinner table. Emotionally it was very difficult for me. I read Dr. Bob's book and started making some big changes in my son's diet. Keaton was drinking over a gallon of milk a week. I cut way back on dairy (one yogurt a day limit and no milk) and I limited the amount of sugar and boxed food he was eating. I was amazed at the changes. My son started trying things that I never was able to get him to eat like vegetables, apples, and ham sandwiches. It still takes him a while to eat his dinner, but there are no tantrums involved. He is happier and doesn't have the same amount of night wakings when I regement his diet. It takes a strong parent to do this, but it is worth it. Great book Dr. Bob.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop the drugs!, April 10, 2006
By
Hello my son was told he was ADHD and took the Ritilin and other forms of the drug, but the side effects were terrible and I couldn't handle the head aches, upset stomaches and not wanting to eat! So I felt there was someone else out there that can help these children get off the drugs. My son was worth the help I could find, my mother saw an article on Dr.Bob's book, "how to stop ritalin in 18 days", so i got the book, than had to meet him, Dr.Bob. My son is know on vitiamns, eating healthier and getting his spine back into shape. He is more calmer and doing well in school. Its not easy but our childern are worth it, for me its better to see him happy than sick on the drugs. The books are a good sorce of information in guiding them(the children) into teaching our kids how to eat healthy and to be aware of what they are eating, and what it can do to them. They need to be educated now and forever, this will help them well into the families.Thank You, Dr. Bob and God Bless You,as you continue!

1.0 out of 5 stars A diet "guru" arrogantly expressing his ignorance on ADHD, May 23, 2009
By
Andrei Juan (Scottsdale, AZ USA) - See all my reviews

First of all, the book is *not* about ADHD -- it's a set of ill-expressed and more or less pertinent dietary recommendations interspersed with anecdotal information about how diet changes have improved the life of various people with ADHD-like (as well as totally unrelated) *symptoms*.

Here are just a couple of samples of the nonsense of which the book is full:

1. Arrogance: "No one has really addressed the underlying cause of hyperactivity, ADD, ADHD and ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder). Trust me. There are a lot of variables. I have read and researched articles, books and history. There is no picture painted by any particular authority. Most of the information, with a few exceptions, is speculation." (page 2)

The author's ridiculous "trust me" is pretty much in synch with using as endorsements of his teachings quotes from "reputable" sources like "Fast Food Nation", "USA Today" and various books of fellow diet "gurus".

2. Ignorance: "In 1908, a scientist named Metchkinoff recommended the daily consumption of yogurt because he felt it promoted good health and prolonged life." (page 124)

If the author bothered to even Google the inexistent name, he would have found right after Google's kind "did you mean" spelling correction a wikipedia page on Ilya *Mechnikov*, who was a scientist awarded the Nobel prize and not some guy who recommended yogurt because he had a feeling it promoted good health.

In conclusion: save your money -- I've bought this book to serve as part of my education on ADHD after I've been diagnosed with it a while ago, and found it to be by far one of the most worthless books I've read (in general, not only on ADHD).

If you're interested in learning about ADHD, I would kindly recommend two criteria in selecting what you read. On one hand, it helps makinig sure that the books are recent, because the body of knowledge has evolved significantly in the last couple of decades. And on the other hand, you might want to Google the name of the author to make sure that it really means something in the scientific community that studies ADHD (my fault that I didn't do this before buying this book).
