Beyond the surface: strengthen your core!,
This review is from: Stop Acting Like A Christian, Just Be One (Paperback)
The only reason that I only gave Christine's other book (A Life Unleashed) a mere 4-star review is because I like this one better! This one goes deeper - to the very core of the issue. You could read A Life Unleashed and still be dissatisfied with your life and your relationship with God because any change motivated by the book could remain at a surface level.
Stop Acting Like A Christian, Just Be One cuts away all the junk of acting like you think you're supposed to act and exposes a (sometimes) malnourished, sidelined relationship with God. Christine starts by leading you through 'the basics', intended to strengthen your 'core'. This is not glamorous or spectacular, but it's the only way to maintain both your sanity and your Christianity long-term! Only after going over these basics do we get to the Great Commandment - telling people about our relationship with God (i.e. evangelism). This book actually got me more excited about evangelism than any 'how to' evangelism book because it comes as a natural overflow, not as an obligation that I have to perform. The second half of the book is a devotional guide - 31 days. Let me be honest - I usually skip over devotional guides cos I don't like them. Even if you're like me, read it - the stories are GREAT! But more importantly, this guide is not asking the obvious questions expecting the obvious answers - the questions actually make you think, and sometimes you can't come up with an answer. I love this book - it encourages you but challenges you (in a way that only Christine can get away with!). I'd recommend it to anyone, no matter where they're at in their Christian journey.

I really liked the book. It gets right to the point of being a Christian and not a Sunday only Christian, but an everyday Christian!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is searching. It speaks to the core of your spirit and how it needs feeding.

If you are just going through the motions...,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stop Acting Like A Christian, Just Be One (Paperback)
Stop Acting Like a Christian, Just Be One, written by Christine Caine is a must-have for anyone who feels like they're just going through the motions of being a Christian.
Being a Christian isn't like wearing a winter coat, one minute we put it on because we're cold, and then the next minute we take it off and store it away until harsh weather rolls in. Yet that's how many of us act. We pull out our church clothes, our church faces and we act differently than we normally do the other six days a week. But acting like a Christian is worlds away from what it really means to be a Christian. How so? Author Caine states it this way, "If we simply try to imitate Christ's external behavior--being kind, compassionate and merciful without strengthening our spiritual core--then we risk missing out on the very process that makes us Christlike. Invariably, we end up acting like a Christian sometimes, but not truly being a Christian at all times." So what is this process the author is talking about? How do we make the change from acting like a Christian to being a Christian? She suggests that we begin with our first true love, the Lord. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." Matthew 22:37. By refocusing our attention on the Lord, building an intimate relationship with Him and spending less time going through the motions of what we think a Christian should be, we are able to concentrate on His goals, plans and directions for our lives. Stop Acting Like A Christian, Just Be One is a fabulous tool that will encourage you to spend time with the Lord, listening to God's voice and being obedient to His calling. Within each chapter you will find scriptural words that will encourage, challenge and inspire you to take this new step in walking in Christ's footprints. Author Christine Caine is part of the leadership team at Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia, as well as a director of Equip & Empower Ministries. She lives her life to the FULL as she is a wife, teacher, preacher, author and mother of two beautiful daughters. When the family isn't changing the world together on the road, they make their home in Sydney, Australia. Armchair Interviews says: Excellent tool to make you listen to God's voice.

In her book "Stop Acting Like A Christian, Just Be One," Chris Caine addresses the very core of Christianity by examining every aspect of the Great Commandment. This book will challenge your thinking about both what it means to BE a Christian as well as the role of the Church collectively. This book is insightful and inspiring.

I consider myself to be someone who is continual learning and growing. This book opened my eyes to things I'd never considered. It has challenged me to dig deeper into myself - into my soul - and assess the damage and make repairs so that I can really be a Christian. The 31-day devotional asks great questions that help to uncover areas in need of overhaul and improvement. I'm working on this for myself and have purchased copies for friends. I want to be a Christian. Christine has provided real information and "how to" steps to make that possible.

Challenging & practical-read only if you're prepared to respond!,

Brilliant book. Challenged me to examine in what ways I was just 'doing' Christianity, and look inside myself and to God to be who GOd has called me to be, living from the inside out. The 30day devotional at the end is really good, practical and quick with scriptural application, and reflective questions to ask yourself and journal from.

This book is wonderful! I came to know Christ over 13 years ago, but this book made me look at my Christian walk in a whole new light. She made me see that my lack of witnessing to others is not only a sin but also shows that I really don't love God with my whole heart. How can you truly love God, if you have a lack of love for the lost? The answer is: you can't. I highly recommend this book. It's an easy read; Christine has a laid back writing style. She makes you feel like she is talking to just you.

Have you ever been in Sunday service listening to the pastor and you think he is speaking to YOU? You think the sermon was written from your own life experience? That's what you'll think as you read Christine's book.
Her writing is awesome and you just don't want to put down the book. Real life experiences bring to life what we all go through. This book is for new believers as well as seasoned elders. My wife and I host a small group bible study in our home every Wednesday and we intend to recommend this book to everyone. Thank you Christine! |
