I "discovered" Foxboro Hottubs in the bargain bin at a Base Exchange in Balad Air Base in Iraq. I bought the album purely out of an interest for the art direction and an intense desire to hear something not in the mainstream. Initially, I was impressed, but I criticized the lead singer for "sounding too much like Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day." Imagine my surprise when I learned that Foxboro Hottubs was in fact the same band members as Green Day. Forget the awards and the pop scene hype, this is what Armstrong, Dirnt, Cool, White, Freese and Preston are all about, profound yet everyday music that isn't pretentious. If you're an indie music snob, get lost, and if you're a pop sensation evangelist, get lost, this album isn't for you. I think this album is about having fun and being true to yourself, Hollywood be damned. Ironically, I find that "American Idiot" and similar songs are quite popular with the US Military despite the `anti-American' message. Foxboro Hottubs, likewise, is quintessentially American, the message is "We are here, we don't care what you think, We're here to live."
...God Bless Rock and Roll .

Yeah it's Green Day. But no it's not. And while it only takes a quick glance at some reviewers to understand that shades of gray escape them, I gotta ask...why make such a big deal out of what is a one off, for their own fun, and hey some fans might like it too album? The songs are short, fast and fun, much like ice cream on a hot summer day. Take it for what it is.

Green Day tries something different with this fun, catchy, and two-sided rock album. I commend them for trying something different with Foxboro Hot Tubs (garage rock) and The Network (Devoesque rock). Both efforts are worth your time and money. Also, Foxboro Hot Tubs are on tour now and it's well well well worth it to see them if you can. You may never get another chance to see Green Day perform in a small intimate venue, like they are now.

LOVE!,
This review is from: Stop Drop And Roll (Audio CD)
Absolutely love this release, as I do with almost anything released by Green Day or Billie Joe. Got the cd in the mail sooner than I expected & within seconds, it was in my player & blasting out of my speakers. Cannot quit replaying "Pedestrian" and my kids have the "ba ba ba" part of Mother Mary down to a science. They sing along quite well to "American Idiot," "Jesus of Suburbia," "Castaway" & "Deadbeat Holiday"....so they are true fans in the making as well. So all this to say, FBHT, aka Green Day, has quite the extended fan base. As well they should. Best band ever , in my mind.....Billie Joe rocks & can do no wrong with his music.

Yeah, it's Green Day (Armstrong. Dint and Cool) plus three friedns and members of the touring band.
Yeah, it's garage rock. Yeah, it's derivative in that the songs harken back to The Who, The Stooges, The Sex Pistols (think of their cover of I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone) and The Kinks, among others. Yeah, you will be grabbed at the beginning of this album - the correct term for this preternatural copy of a 60s party record - in the same way you were grabbed by the start of Tutti Frutti. It's hard to imagine and then believe what you are hearing after the quiet and following clcik as the needle hits the vinyl from the first, eponymous cut. From there, it's a wild ride through eleven more songs that personify the young, loud and snotty side of garage. Yeah, you will listen to it over and over and over. Yeah, I hope they do it again!

I have listened to Green Day since they were playing 924 Gillman in Berkeley, but none of their albums grabbed me until American Idiot. That was one of the most brilliant punk albums ever. Foxboro Hot Tubs shows their musical talents in a different genre. They put together some great tunes with doo-wop and other stylings of the 60's and it works in their style. It's different and it's good.

If you like Green Day you'll love this. If you like Sock-Hop sound, punk, anything by the Monkees or if you can imagine Green Day doing an Austin Power's soundtrack, then you'll really love this. It has a wonderful old-skool sound. I can't get enough of it. It really doesn't sound like anything Green Day has done before, so it is really fresh and nice to hear something different from them. I love this album and everything Green Day has done (if you didn't know, the band consist of Green Day plus a few others). Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Great CD for your next '60's trivia party!,

You gotta wonder what Billie Joe Armstrong's older siblings were listening to during his formative years... what '60's gems pervaded his subconscious mind, because this CD hearkens back to classic AM radio tunes. It's fun to listen to the songs, play "Name That Tune" and identify the groups and hits to which Green Day pays tribute: from the Rascals and the Yardbirds to the Monkees and the Raiders, and everyone in between. While the guitar and drum work is spot-on, Dirnt's bass work is notably superior to the original genre. Armstrong is undoubtedly one of the cleverest hook-writers of our generation. When you tire of playing "Name That Tune," just imagine the career he could have had as an advertising jingle writer. (Move over, Barry Manilow -- Strychnine Twitch is here!) Geez!

At first glance, I thought, "What the? I knew Green Day went under a pseudonym for one album and stuff, but this Hot-Tub stuff seems ridiculous! They're obviously going to 'jump the shark'."
What can I say? I was wrong. Although the album didn't have the same feel or mood of Green Day's albums, all its music is still lively, fresh, and... well... pretty awesome. What more can I say? If you like Green Day, then you'll love the Foxboro Hot Tubs. |
