MASTER CLASS IN SPANISH LYRICS,
By Leo Hanover Perez "Leo" (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stop (Jewl) (Audio CD)
FORGET what this man did in the 80's. Many of us were too young to appreciate any of that repertoire. Let's talk about how TODAY this man is the purveyor of very pertinent lyrics that punch you in the chest. That is, if you've ever been in love, lost in love, or believed in it for the first time.
As a lyricist, I bow to this man! I'd never heard of him before now. By accident, a video was playing on a spanish tv station when I heard the lyrics: "...te he dado todo lo que tengo, hasta quedar en deuda conmigo mismo, y todavia preguntas si te quiero..." (from 'TU DE QUE VAS'). I knew then this man-whoever he was- was no joke! I ran out and bought his album, forthwith. His genius use of chords makes for a complete experience. NO tricks or gimmicks here. Just phenomenal musicianship. As Wayne would say: "...we're not worthy, we're not worthy!.." And yes! I cried listening to the much talked-bout 'SI LA VES'. A duet that also introduced me to the R&B tinged duo of SIN BANDERAS. I'm not ashamed to admit it as a man. If someone has ever left you, you'll be brought at least close to the Kleenex box. Just one more testament to this man's talent for wordsmithing. GENIUS. It reminds me of Gloria Estefan at her height of lyric-writing in the eighties when everyone cried, begged, or rejoiced to one of her ballads. If you're a songwriter, this man will send you back to school. Alot to learn from him.

"Tu de que vas" is one of the most romantic love songs that I have heard in both English and Spanish. My wife a non-Spanish rock fan was so moved by this song that she is now a De Vita fan. A must have. Un CD muy cheverre.
