Tracey Samuels, an attractive young woman, has serious problems and J. Gail tells her story in STOP LOOKING AT ME! Tracey is suspicious of everyone, including her mother and her closest friends. Since grade school, she has always been overly concerned about people talking about her behind her back, strangers looking at her, her friends plotting against her and as she grows older, she is getting worse. Tracey is not opposed to putting force behind her fears either.

Tracey meets Mike, a street thug, falls for him in a big way and strangely enough, she actually trusts him. She won't introduce him to any of her friends for fear they will take him from her. Is Mike really what he seems or is he going to be Tracey's downfall?

A friend's mother gives all the young women in Tracey's circle of friends, a trip to California for a week and Tracey, being terrified of planes, takes the train, turning a trip of a few hours into three days. Needless to say, she has plenty of adventures but the biggest story is when she arrives in California and meets up with her friends. Tracey shocks even them, who know her so well. They are not sure if they should show sympathy or stop speaking to her altogether.

STOP LOOKING AT ME is a novel that is touching as well as hilarious. I found myself torn between feeling sorry for Tracey and feeling sorrier for her loyal friends. Still, in spite of how tragic Tracey's antics were, they were also super funny. It is truly a book worth reading.
