Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up-Galt interviewed many former conscientious objectors, including her husband, to help tell about this tumultuous period and to give insight into their motivations. She clearly explains the idea of civil disobedience, beginning with Henry Thoreau, and how his writings had an effect on the protest movement. Information is provided about the 1968 Democratic National Convention, the Chicago 8, Students for a Democratic Society, the Weathermen, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon's war policies, the Kent State shootings, and many other significant events and people of that era. Small, framed black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout. This book gives readers a feeling for the divisiveness that was part of our culture at that time and provides a perspective on the Vietnam War that isn't readily available elsewhere.

From Booklist

This People's History title examines the history of Vietnam protests, large-scale and small: how they were organized; their successes and failures; and the diversity of participants. Incorporating personal interviews, newspaper accounts, and other sources, Galt provides effective social, political, and historical context for everything from small, peaceful rallies to such watershed events as the 1968 Democratic Convention and Kent State. She also explores the influence of and parallels to the civil rights movement, and the government's role in public perception of events overseas and at home. Often using her husband, a conscientious objector, as an example, Galt illustrates how the war impacted not just faceless groups but also individuals with unique perspectives and experiences. The prose is clear and engaging; events are described in depth, conveying how protests can increase public awareness, enact change, and sometimes backfire with tragic consequences. Black-and-white photos portray the war and diverse public response, from marches to sit-ins to draft-card burnings. Bibliography. Shelle Rosenfeld

More About the Author

Margot Fortunato Galt grew up, a Yankee in Charleston, South Carolina. Her fascination with history and the arts started with her father who taught history at The Citadel, and librarian mother who created a quiet order with beautiful reproductions of the Impressionists. The Old Citadel, a block-long medieval fortress, had its foot-long rats, but the Fortunato girls played careless Red Rover and didn't mind the ghosts of cadets who had fired on Ft. Sumter to start the Civil War. Margot's work as a writer-in-the-schools, now living in the Twin Cities longer than anywhere else, has fueled two books that link history and culture with creative writing: The Story in History 1992, and Circuit Writer, 2006. Her oral history memoir with Ojibway artist George Morrison, Turning the Feather Around 1998, is an innovative approach to personal history: Morrison's voice relates, under Galt's guidance.

Margot's poetry collection, Between the Houses, Laurel Poetry Collective 2004, displays her passionate care for the past, the built and natural worlds, and the visual arts. She has published many articles on the visual arts, poetry in many anthologies, won grants from The Loft, the Mn State Arts Board, the Jerome Foundation, and many individual poetry awards. Her recent projects include searching for an agent/publisher for a mother-daughter travel memoir to Germany and Italy, and writing and researching an historical novel set in New Bedford, Hawaii, and Italy. This review is from: Stop This War!: American Protest of the Conflict in Vietnam (People's History) (Hardcover)
Violent or non, organized or not, protesters had one thing in common - a desire to end the war in Vietnam. An informative look at the groups, individuals, and events rocking the end of the 60's and early 70's until the conflict ended. The government and other officials are, of course, the bad guys, while the protesters are idealistic and self-sacrificing. A very readable text, enough for reports. Black and white photos, bibliography, and index are included.
