5.0 out of 5 stars Really terrific
Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I really like this recording. Mike Holoway and Louise Gold don't equal the brilliant and authoritative performances of Newley and Quayle, but they do very, very well.

2.0 out of 5 stars BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM
To start off with, I am an avid Anthony Newly fan and was really sadden by his death. I did get to see the original Broadway show. Unfortunatly, this new version does not match the original. Newlys way of putting over a song is missed. The songs seem to be sung much slower so the performers can sing the songs. It was Newlys show and when you listen to the original...

2.0 out of 5 stars BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM, January 12, 2000

This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
To start off with, I am an avid Anthony Newly fan and was really sadden by his death. I did get to see the original Broadway show. Unfortunatly, this new version does not match the original. Newlys way of putting over a song is missed. The songs seem to be sung much slower so the performers can sing the songs. It was Newlys show and when you listen to the original cast album, you can tell the difference. Lets hope they will reissue the origianl cast album again. It is an important Broadway musical and should be back on cd for the people who did not get a chance to get it when it was available. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones. Did we really need another recording of Stop The World? I don't think so.

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I really like this recording. Mike Holoway and Louise Gold don't equal the brilliant and authoritative performances of Newley and Quayle, but they do very, very well.

I'm puzzled by the hostility that the performances of Holoway and Gold have provoked from most of the other reviewers. And I would think that some of the Newley lovers would be pleased that that the people at JAY think highly enough of this score to have produced a complete recording of it, even if they didn't love the result. Instead, they seem affronted by the idea that anyone would dare produce a recording with someone other than Newley as Littlechap.

Holoway has a more pleasing voice than Newley, and his acting of the songs satisfied me completely. Obviously, Newley had an authority in these songs that no one else will ever have. But Holoway is excellent.

And I think that Gold is often as funny as Quayle. There are definitely places where Quayle is absolutely matchless, brilliant and beyond comparison. But Gold is very good.

This recording is well-conducted, the orchestra plays terrifically, the orchestrations sound fabulous, and the supporting cast is fine. And it contains the entire score.

I've heard almost all of the releases in the JAY Masterworks series, and I think this is one of the best. Some of the other reviewers seemed to have been upset that neither of the recordings featuring Newley and Quayle were available while this one was. Well, it seems strange to blame this recording for that. The people at JAY weren't keeping the other ones from being released.

In any case, the Broadway recording with Newley and Quayle is again available. I'm glad to have both.

4.0 out of 5 stars GET IT just to hear the genius, December 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
Stop the World- I Want to Get Off is a marvelous musical, my personal favorite. When it debuted, it was so very different from the other shows on Broadway While the Anthony Newley recording is not longer available, this title is. Mike Hollaway sings in a more melodic fashion than the unbeatable Newley. The only other man who may have been able to pull off the role effectively would be Joel Grey, who actually took over the part. The point is, this recording is not at all bad, it is basically a collection of the songs, more like , Mike Hollaway sings "Stop the World". It is worth buying to hear the classic songs (the fact that is the ONLY one also leaves no other options). The cd with Newley is no longer available, the record can be found if you look in the right places, GEMM.com. For the while, this is the only way to hear the complete show on cd.

2.0 out of 5 stars An insult to the great Anthony Newley, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
OK so it is the only full version of the show currently available on cd. But sorry Mike Holloway is no Anthony Newley! For the ultimate appreciation of the show record the original Newley tracks and edit the music only tracks from this version. Isn't it about time someone released the broadway cast on cd? 1.0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE RESPECT FOR THE LATE ANTHONY NEWLEY, PLEASE!, May 16, 1999

Now that Anthony Newley has passed away, it would be a good gesture of respect to reissue the absolutely perfect Original Cast Album he recorded with Anna Quayle. In an era where the removal of Pamela Anderson's implants gets more attention than the passing of this talented composer and performer, we must stand up and DEMAND that such as Newley are never forgotten.

1.0 out of 5 stars The CD is boring., November 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
I can't understand why the original cast recording is not on CD. This latest version is listless, boring and a very poor representation of the exciting and novel Newley cast on Broadway. Whoever is listening...please put the original cast recording with Anthony Newley on CD..I can't even find the LP recording anymore.

2.0 out of 5 stars SOUNDS LIKE IT DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN, August 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
I can't for the life of me understand why this recording was made. It sounds like it died and went to heaven. The only cd to by is the origianl broadway cast album that is on Polydor and may still be available. Anthony Newly makes the recording. I saw the play and he was great. They killed the movie which is now on Video by not letting Newly reprise his role. It is also not on cd yet. If you can't get the Broadway cd, keep listing to the album. Don't by this cast album.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast (as suggested by headline), January 28, 2000
This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
Sorry to say that this release does not measure up to the 10/12/1988 Polydor 820 261 distributed by UNI and now out of print. I must heartily agree with Mr. Dunn (above). Bring back the Original Broadway cast!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacks magic, February 11, 2000
This review is from: Stop The World I Want To Get Off! (1995 London Studio Cast) (Audio CD)
Newley was the magic. At the Broadway performance we saw in '63 and in the Album with Anna Quayle there was fresh energy and not a false moment. It's not entirely fair to compare but in comparison, this is stale and leaden...like the movie made of Stop The World (without Newley).

What else we might have written was already said exactly as we would have said it by Jeff Dunn in his review.

We gave three stars because it is still Newley and Bricusse and so it is still marvelous invention and worth a '...quick butcher's hook....'
