You Run Away

Imagine a shrine for all great sayings, a Pop Psychology Hall of Fame if you will. On these special walls you'd find such stalwarts as "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger," "Tomorrow's Another Day" and "Everything Happens For A Reason." Right over there the "Light At The End of The Tunnel" stands next to "The Great Unknown." ... Read more in Amazon's Barenaked Ladies Store

Editorial Reviews

Stop Us If You've Heard This Before

The Canadian pop-rock group signed with Reprise in 1992 and cultivated a loyal following who appreciated their freewheeling concerts and memorable songwriting. Stop Us If You've Heard This Before draws deeply from those formative years with an early, live version of "Same Thing," a live cover of the Beastie Boys "Shake Your Rump," the demo for longtime favorite "Old Apartment," and the previously unreleased live track "Teenage Wasteland." Also included from that era is the rare Pull s Break Remix version of "One Week," the smash that helped propel the Barenaked Ladies to international stardom in 1998.

Stop Us also unearths several unreleased tracks recorded during sessions for Everything To Everyone (2003), including "Long While" and "I Don t Get It Anymore," along with the demo for the album track "Second Best." Also included from those sessions are versions of "Half A Heart" and "Adrift" - two songs the band later re-recorded for Barenaked Ladies Are Me (2006).

The collection offers two remaining gems: an early version of "I Can, I Will, I Do" recorded in 2001 during sessions for Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits<?i>; and "Yes, Yes, Yes," a song previously available only as a UK b-side or as a bonus track from the deluxe version of Everything To Everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rarities CD, One of My New Favorites! May 8, 2012
By Joe
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was a bit skeptical about the track listing at first, because a lot of these songs have been previously released. That all changed, however, because these are versions that have never been released. They are all excellent, and greatly exceeded my expectations.

I'm glad they included Steve songs in here as well. It shows that BNL haven't wiped him from their history, and that some of the anger has blown over. It's also good because it appeals to all BNL fans, whether they like them as a four-piece or not.

1. "I Don't Get It Anymore" (10/10): Amazing song, and it's the perfect way to start off the CD. I've been waiting for a studio version of this song for years. It was recorded back in 2001, and Ed's "young" vocals sound very soft and smooth. It's nice and mellow, but what I like most about this song is the meaning. I can really relate, and I'm sure many of you can as well.

2. "Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!" (9/10): This is one of the two tracks on the album to have been previously released. Still, it remained a rarity (being a B-side to the UK single of "Celebrity"). It's a fun and rocking song. The stereo mix included here sounds much better than the regular version.

3. "Half A Heart" (10/10): An earlier version of what was later re-recorded and included on "Barenaked Ladies Are Men" in 2007. Recorded back in 2003, I find this version much better than the "BLAM" version. It's a lot more mellow, sounds a lot tighter, and Ed's voice sounds a lot more emotional and endearing. The bridge is magnificent.

4. "The Old Apartment" [Demo] (9/10): Very interesting to hear the way this song was originally written as a soft rock song, before Ed suggested they turn it into a rock song.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-BUY blast from the past May 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This disc makes me miss the good old days of BNL even more than I did before. Steve and Ed together truly make magic; I have more respect for Kevin as a musician than I once did, but he is *not* Steve vocally, and BNL has suffered for it.

Recorded between 1992 and 2003 all over North America, this disc spans their most of the band's time together, but includes more material from the early days. A good mix of tracks you know well and love if you've been following BNL for a while (I've been a big fan ever since I stole a Yellow Tape from a friend in about 1990(!) and songs you've likely never heard before, the harmony and happiness, wicked sense of humor, and in-jokes are all there. "Old Apartment" and "One Week", are here but in versions much different than you're used to and they are therefore fresh... I sometimes skip through those songs now because I've heard them so many too many times but I'm enjoying them again on a third listen of the disc since Amazon got it here at about 5 pm.

Some of the material is clearly outtakes, probably left off an album, and for a reason; rough edges and so on... but if you've seen the band live, you'll know that their energy comes through even with little mistakes. They once played a great acoustic session IN A BATHROOM -- you can watch it online if you don't believe me! :-)

Their cover of the Beastie Boys "Shake Your Rump" demands to be played LOUD and it is awesome - their cover of the Thomas Dolby sample in that song is also boss. Such a nice tribute, by accident, to Adam Yauch - RIP. That's the only song on the disc not written by some combination of BNL band members.

The last song on the disc is a fantastic version of "Adrift". It made me earworm myself with "Bank Job" even though that song is not on the disc (it follows "Adrift" on BLAM). Genius!!

I rate this a MUST BUY for BNL fans, both casual and serious. There's a lot here to enjoy. Thanks, guys!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought for a gift February 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was bought for a gift and she loved it. As mentioned in the other review for BareNaked Ladies, the only thing I know about them is they sing the theme song for Big Bang Theory. But she loved it and that is what counts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just some demos they recorded in their basement June 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The lyrics of BNL classic "Boxed Set" become deliciously ironic as the band has released this collection of demos, songs dropped from albums, and alternate recordings of songs on their earlier albums. Nevertheless, hardcore BNL fans who pine for the band's older sound from the "Stunt" era won't be disappointed. More casual fans, or those unfamiliar with BNL, would be better served by the group's major album releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for die-hard fans! April 23, 2013
By Batya67

If you are an avid Barenaked Ladies fan, you have to get this cd. There are versions of songs I haven't heard before. I think they are the demos of the songs as written. "Adrift" is one of my favorites and I love this version! There is also the hard-to-find "Shake Your Rump" which not only sounds REALLY good, but it made me laugh! The more I listen, the more I love this collection!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting April 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bare Naked Ladies fans may find the demo versions interesting since most of us are used to the released versions of these songs but I'm more inerested in the unreleased songs. Once you've become a fan and own all of their albums, any new music is icing on the cake.
