From Library Journal
Huddle's first volume of poetry, Paper Boy ( LJ 2/1/79), received good notices, as did his story collections. Divided into four sections, his second volume of poetry is important because of its sequence of poems about Vietnam. "Tour of Duty" presents, in 18 informal sonnets, a soldier's memory of the war: "I'm forty-six. I was twenty-three then./ I'm here with what I've dreamed or remembered." These episodic narratives color the other three sections, keeping in the reader's mind dislocations the speaker seeks to understand as renewal and reconciliation is approached. "Tour of Duty" compares favorably with the work of W.D. Ehrhart, our leading chronicler in verse of the Vietnam War.
