Book Description

Storys Barn Guide September 30, 2007
The clear, easy-to-follow visuals that are the hallmark of the Barn Guide series are uniquely useful to people working with horses. Horses are large animals and can be unpredictable. This at-a-glance reference to dozens of common procedures frees the handler's hands, giving her better control of every equine situation. Better control leads to increased safety, and safety—for both human and horse—is the priority for every equestrian.

Author Charni Lewis, a gifted trainer and instructor, gives readers a complete course in horse handling and grooming. She begins by explaining the safest way to approach a horse—where to stand, how to walk behind him—and then leads the reader through catching, leading, turning out to graze, and tying, always emphasizing efficiency and safety. Grooming is just as important as handling, and Lewis shows how to do it correctly, from clipping fetlocks to braiding manes and tails.

Providing guidance on every aspect of handling and grooming, this manual covers all the things new owners and caregivers need to learn and provides more experienced handlers and stable managers with a thorough refresher course of clear, accurate, user-friendly information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully descriptive and illustrated practical horse information for the new rider, November 5, 2007

This review is from: Storey's Barn Guide to Horse Handling and Grooming (Storys Barn Guide) (Spiral-bound)
As someone who's been involved with horses throughout my life I've always sought a really thorough, easy-to-understand guide for newcomers to the world of horses and riding. This is the publication I've been looking for: It contains well-written and clearly illustrated step-by-step procedures for all the basic tasks in horse handling and grooming, plus a special emphasis on safety throughout. The friendly, "visual" format with photographs and detailed drawings is great for this kind of instructional text.

Although aimed at new riders, the book will also be of interest to seasoned riders too as it not only provides knowledge and skills but also an informative guide to how horses think and how to more effectively communicate with them. The author de-mystifies horse behavior in the "Reading a Horse" chapter and shows how to understand the cues that show a horse's moods and important "warning signs". These are the kinds of things that experienced riders have spent a long time learning to see but the book provides a huge "leg-up" to people who haven't spent a lot of time around horses yet.

The book closes with a really fun chapter on "Horse Play" with step-by-step instruction on how teach your horse some cute tricks.

So I highly recommend this book for new riders, young and old. I've already given away a couple of copies and gotten rave reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, August 29, 2009
This review is from: Storey's Barn Guide to Horse Handling and Grooming (Storys Barn Guide) (Spiral-bound)
Love this guide! It shows you everything that you would ever want a beginner to know, and even an experianced person will find it useful! The whole thing being designed like a calendar so it can be hung in the barn is an unbelieveable idea! This was one of the best buys I have made! I would also recommend the other guide by Storeys to go with this one, the Vet Guide!
