4.0 out of 5 stars A great source perhaps light on a couple of topics.
There seems to be two rival audiences for this book: the breeder and the pet owner. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best book on rabbits
We are raising rabbits for food. I actually got interested in this and saw it as a possibility because of one of Bob Bennett's other books: "Raising Rabbits Successfully", which our library had. When I saw he had written the Storey's Guide on the subject, I felt pretty confident that it would be a good reference for the bookshelf. I also expected it to be a more updated...

There seems to be two rival audiences for this book: the breeder and the pet owner. Although this book presents pretty much everything either one of them will need to do what it is they want to do, the pet owners are put off by the slaughter sections. Hopefully putting aside any subjective values, I think this book serves both camps admirably. The breeder is easily satisfied but, in the author's defense, I don't think the "I just want a Mopsy" camp can be appeased without completely eliminating sections crucial to the breeder camp. Topics I found wanting or missing: 1) For the pet camp, house breaking. 2) For the breeder, tanning. 3) Also for the breeder, more on slaughter and cleaning. I may be being too critical on this last topic since, because I am personally so unsure in this area, I was left wanting. Perhaps the topic is adequately covered but my own insecurities makes me feel like I'm missing something. Bottom line (and isn't this what we all want): If you're thinking about rabbits, get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raising Rabbits Review, January 21, 2001

This review is from: Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits: Breeds, Care, Facilities (Paperback)
If you're searching for a book on how to raise rabbits, you'll come across Bob Bennett's name frequently, because Mr. Bennett is the absolute authority on raising these animals. Whether you are just starting out or a skilled rabbit rancher, Storey's Guide to "Raising Rabbits" is a must-have book for your library. Mr. Bennett's book is a revised edition of his Raising Rabbits the Modern Way. Nothing is left out this time---over 64 pages of information has been added to this edition. You'll find yourself referring to this book often if you want to raise rabbits successfully. And Mr. Bennett's no-nonsense approach to the mating and butchering of what some may consider delicate subjects, makes the material readable by all family members. The best part---all topics has been updated right to the most recent prices. And Raising Rabbits is loaded with resources to guide you to other relevant projects such as composting, growing your own feed, raising worms for sale and tanning for profit. Bob guides you chapter by chapter for building a most successful rabbitry that should prosper for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDEFUL! Highly recommended!!, January 9, 2003
This review is from: Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits: Breeds, Care, Facilities (Paperback)
This book has taught me the majority of what I know about rabbits. It is wonderful and I am glad I made the decision to check it out, even though I only keep rabbits as pets. :-)

Bob Bennett is extremely knowledgeable about rabbits and this book goes to show that. GREAT book!

The only thing about it that I can see would be a problem with most pet owners is the section on rabbits used for fur/food. I understand that this is merely one use for domestic rabbits and I am completely fine with that. But to some other pet owners, this may be found offensive. This is why I must add that for those who are against the use of rabbits for commercial purposes, please either skip those pages or get a different book.

Other than that, I must say that this book deserves more than 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Rabbit Book Ever!, February 1, 2006

I have read at least 6 books on raising rabbits and this one is the best by far! (Bennett's other rabbit books are also great - but there is a lot of overlap so only one is needed.) I used his information every step of the way when building my rabbitry, including building my own all-wire hutches. If you are interested in raising rabbits, be sure to join the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder's Association at http://arba.net/ )It is very inexpensive to join and membership includes a free copy of the "Official Guide Book Raising Better Rabbits & Cavies" 256 pages and another great book. The book itself is worth the membership, but you also get a subscription to the magazine "Domestic Rabbits."

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better Storey's guide books..., October 15, 2006
This review is from: Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits: Breeds, Care, Facilities (Paperback)
Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits is one of the better written Storey guides. By that I mean it reads a bit less like a textbook. The author adds a bit of humor, which keeps it from getting boring.

One of the best chapters was the one on Rabbit "Housing and Equipment" as there were several good illustrations of rabbit hutches for the small scale pet owner and the large scale operator in this chapter.

If you're looking to pick a Rabbit breed you like and are looking for lots of photo's and information on each breed, this book doesn't have it. Also, many parts of this book are geared toward larger scaled rabbit breeders and sellers, than for the small-scale hobbyist wanting to raise a few rabbits as pets.

Overall, this is a wonderful reference book on Rabbits and one I would buy again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful..., September 26, 2005
This review is from: Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits: Breeds, Care, Facilities (Paperback)
This book is extremely helpful, although it's geared more toward the meat rabbit raisers. I breed NDs, so I obviously don't use the rabbit recipies section! but, if you skip over the meat rabbit sections, this is an extremly helpful book for any breeder. For instance, I bought a rabbit from a lady who had just bought the rabbit from a not-so-nice man. the man had claimed that he had not bred the doe, but the lady didn't beleive him. So, I ended up with a rabbit that I didn't know if it was bred or not! But this book explains, in an easy to understand way, how to tell if the doe is pregnant or not, and now I'm fairly possitive that my doe IS pregnant. So to sum all that up, I highly reccomend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For Getting A Breeding/Showing Program Started, February 6, 2002

This review is from: Storey's Guide to Raising Rabbits: Breeds, Care, Facilities (Paperback)
An invaluable book for those interested in the world of breeding and showing rabbits. Very comprehensive, this book illustrates the many different breeds as well as care of the brood & show rabbit alike, written from the experience of a man who has been breeding & showing since his childhood. However, if you are extremely sensitive about the issue of raising rabbits for the meat market, this is probably not the book for you.

This guide contains just about everything you need to know about raising meat rabbits. Although geared toward mass production, there is also some good advice for pet owners.

When I saw he had written the Storey's Guide on the subject, I felt pretty confident that it would be a good reference for the bookshelf. I also expected it to be a more updated version

This book may be adequate, but I found it difficult to chase down specific pieces of information - such as age for slaughter, age for weaning, etc. Mr Bennett is a font of information, and this book does contain valuable information, but falls short of his previous work. Storey's is generally the place to start when learning about livestock. In view of his previous work, I found this book a little disappointing.
