Editorial Reviews

Review

This series provides a good introduction to the wealth of stories to be found around the world, and would make a good addition to a primary school library. -- Armadillo, Autumn 00 Desirable and collectable [...] What makes them work is their integrity and synergy as a series. [...] These stories cannot fail to stimulate your child's imagination and sense of wonder. -- Children's books in Ireland, Dec 00 The selection of stories is interesting, and these books would be of great value in class. --Books in schools 2000, Issue 82

1.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful of This Book, September 21, 2007
This review is from: Stories from the Amazon (Multicultural Stories) (Paperback)
I bought his book when I started a unit study with my kids on Brazil. I found the pictures and stories to be a little gruesome for most children. "Kuat spied a dead body lying on the riverbank. Something was crawling all over its decaying skin-a pile of hungry maggots." Complete with a picture of a dead body covered in flies. "He picked out the eyes with his beak and gobbled them up. Then he feasted on the rotting flesh." "Kuat slipped inside the dead body and lay very still." In the following story the boy dies and the mother is instructed to bury his eyes in the ground. And in the final story the little girl drowns in the river but is replaced by a plant. Over all, I would not recommend this book at all. A better choice? Daniel Munduruku's Tales from the Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC STORIES I NEVER READ BEFORE, August 18, 2000
A Kid's Review
This book is full of fantastic stories I have never read anywhere before. I especially liked the last story, which is a ghostly tale set in the jungle. The stories are very exciting but they also give you information about the rain forest. Saviour Pirotta visited my school in London for our book week and he told us some of his favourite stories. It made me buy the book. Saviour writes stories based in many countries round the world, not just England or America.
