4.0 out of 5 stars Ladyvipb - Stories Of A Broken Heart And Recovering, October 26, 2011
This review is from: Stories of a Broken Heart and Recovering (Audio CD)
Maurice Fulton has always had a knack for quirky house, and on his only outing (thus far) as Ladyvipb, STORIES OF A BROKEN HEART AND RECOVERING, he doesn't disappoint. The subdued joyfulness of "The Wiggie Bop" shows that a broken heart is probably the furthest thing from his mind. "Life With Denise" is plenty funky and quirky, replete with altered vocals from Wanda Felicia, but we get a chance to hear her vocal stylings again on the more straightforward "You Gave Away My Everything." The flanged chorus on "I Why The Pain" suggests a little hint of sadness, which carries into "A New Day," which, to my ears, samples the piano line that kicks off The Art of Noise's "Moments in Love." "Please Heal Me" packs in some serious swing with its double bass and horns, while "Pain In My Brain" gets you wiggling. The combo of a string quartet and slight bits of wigged out electronics launches "Nartia" into the stratosphere, and the final track, "Yesterday Has Gone" kicks out some bongo frenzy and places a careful piano melody atop it, a strange and fascinating contrast. A tender and lovely album.
