What's a zine?,

This review is from: Stories Care Forgot: An Anthology of New Orleans Zines (Paperback)
I was amazed to discover zines (after an article in NY Times and help from my kids). Using techniques that hit some complicated intersection of folk art, literature, journalism, essay and memoir, the authors of the pieces in this book show clearly why people want to restore New Orleans, despite everything, after Katrina. These writers set the culture of the city before us in all its splendid and sometimes frightening wackiness, its wonder and diversity.

This review is from: Stories Care Forgot: An Anthology of New Orleans Zines (Paperback)
I only lived in New Orleans for a little under a year, 2007, but this anthology of zine articles made my heart pain for the Upper Ninth Ward, the Quarter, all the quirks and broken pavement and train tracks and street musicians and girls in torn camisoles and leggings and nose rings, the music and the bars and o my god the food, just stuff you buy at the corner but so much better than anything I've eaten since. I miss all of it. Read this if you can find a copy.
