Book Description

This is the first book in a series celebrating the Western novella, a popular genre form. "Riders of the Storm" by Robert J. Horton tells of the encounter between an outlaw and a local constable in an electrical storm on the Montana-Canada border. Walt Coburn's "The Texas Hellion" finds a lawman posing as a wanted man in order to track down the man who framed him, forcing him to serve several years in Yuma Prison. Cherry Wilson's stories have been compared to Max Brand at his best. "The Cayuse" is the story of Jase Kress and his love for Firefly, a horse he has raised from a colt.

4.0 out of 5 stars three sparkling short western novels, June 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Stories of the Golden West I (Five Star First Edition Western) (Hardcover)
Short novels by Robert J. Horton, his protege Walt Coburn, and Cherry Wilson. These writers deserve to be better known and these three gems are good evidence. The emphasis is on character development, not just on action. The setting of the west is sparse and simple, as compared with the complexity of a modern city. For me, this sparseness wonderfully mirrors the isolation of the modern city dweller. Jon Tuska is a good guide to what deserves attention --- and why --- in the vast library of western literature.
