1924. In this volume we read of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Davy Crockett, and of George Rogers Clark. We follow the trail of Lewis and Clark as they made their laborious way west to the Pacific. These men were followed by such men as Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody and Custer. The story of these men is the story of the West, the story of the nation. These are but some of the Great American Scouts. In writing of them we only propose to detail the matter-of-fact tale of what they did. We must always remember that the men went into unknown wilds and made it possible for civilization to follow them. They met adventure coldly, methodically, and as part of their daily duty. In all our thoughts of them, we see romance; we see their boldness and courage, for we have imagination and can picture the lives they must have led!
