Something I Read on a Rainy Day,

This review is from: Stories From the Inkslingers (Paperback)
An eclectic and fascinating collection of stories. I particularly enjoyed Justynn Tyme's "Les Fleurs Demento's". It's a thought provoking personal manifesto with a twist and turn of events filled with imaginative imagery.

A pleasing repast of reading,

This review is from: Stories From the Inkslingers (Paperback)
I've never really been a fan of short story reading. To me, they lacked the depth, emotional connection - the satisfaction - I sought in longer works. Stories From the Ink Slingers came highly recommended and because of my busy schedule I thought, `What the heck; at least I can get some reading in.'
This compelling anthology opens with At Sea, a poignant seafaring tale that is both eerie and mysterious, driving me onward in search of an answer. Baffled by the Green Door earns salutatorian status in this volume and reveals a young girl struggling to make sense of a world filled with both good and bad. A Christmas Surprise also features a young girl in a tough situation - one that we can all relate to in these trying economic times. Next up are a couple of murder mysteries; although it is a disservice to pigeonhole them as such. Compost and Dead Man's Treasure are well-written, strongly character driven stories - as are all of the selections in Stories From the Ink Slingers. As I read this anthology, usually one story at a time, I began to sense something. I can't place my finger on it, even now, but it did seem like a pattern of emotion built as I progressed. Les Fleurs Dementos comes at you out of left field with a delightfully chaotic tale of a young man struggling with those most unruly of God's creations: flowers. This vignette seemed to cleanse my literary palate as I prepared for dessert. If you like your dessert to be a heady mixture of contrasting flavor, then you'll enjoy Street Smarts, a story that follows a scientist's quest to fix another of man's innumerable follies. Although I have never acquired a taste for it, many Europeans do not consider a meal finished until one can relax in the drawing room with a good Port. The closing selection of Stories From the Ink Slingers, Transfusions, is longer and provides a most satisfying conclusion. As I closed this excellent anthology, I reflected on how Transfusions was full of brilliant description, three-dimensional characters and a quite riveting plot. In short, it was just like its seven wonderful predecessors - only...more. If you need some fine reading in the drawing room after dinner, or over coffee in the morning, or as you sneak away from work for a harried twenty-minute lunch, take a copy of Stories From the Ink Slingers with you and read one of the eight entertaining entrees. You won't be left unsatisfied.

Enjoyment to the Eighth Degree!,

What a wonderful summer read times eight! The authors whose works compose this anthology have each contributed a delightful mix of genres, each unique and highly entertaining. I especially enjoyed "Street Smart" by J. Gregory Smith. This author's scene setting skills and descriptive narrative made this reader want to keep turning the page to see what happened next. His imagery was so profound that I actually thought one character had blue eyes until I re-read the story and discovered eye color was never mentioned! Clearly, J. Gregory Smith is an author whose star will soon rise to great heights. I'm glad I had the opportunity to enjoy his work and that of his colleagues. If you enjoy a good read, then Stories from the Inkslingers is a must.
