The unique flavor of New England literature is well-represented in this selection, which includes the well-known "Secret Life of Walter Mitty" as well as stories by Lovecraft and Hawthorne. Stories by lesser known writers round out the choices. Each of the four readers does a fine job of presenting men, women, children and antiquated accents. Jean Stafford's "Hope Chest" is beautifully rendered with the pathos and frustration of an embittered old woman's encounter with a sweet, strong-willed child. The horror of a man and two boys lost at sea in "The Ledge" is haunting and painful to listen to. This is an excellent collection, especially for those seeking diverse bits of Americana. S.G.B.
