A very nice animation of the young Merlin vs. Vortigern, March 8, 1999
By A Customer
This is not a great animation, but nice for kids to look at (ages 6-10). It is the well-known story of the Dinas Emrys legend, in which Vortigern the tyrant (very evil) flees to Wales and build a tower to resist his enemies in. Or at least, he tries, for it falls apart every night. Merlin, coming to terms with his special powers and the loneliness that comes with them, fulfills his role in the downfall of the tyrant by using his prophetic powers.

Merlin's Magic, October 20, 2009
Next to Disney's Sword in the Stone this is the best animated Arthurian movie.
the story itself is based off the book by Jane Yolen.
Yolen retells the story orginly told by Geoffery of Monmeth.
the young Merlin is taken by the tyrant Vortigern so that the king can sacrifice him and make his tower stand. Merlin however revils why the tower can not stand and has the men dig up the sight, which releases two Dragons; one White and one Red.
Merlin then prophesies the future.
he also tells Vortigern how he will meet his fate.
Vortigern would soon meet his end burt alive in his tower by Uther and his brother.
Yolen retells Geoffery's story quit well. the orginal book is very good with its story and art.
this animated version is a good adaptation of that book.
here the art is by Alan Lee (best known for his Lord of the Rings work).
Merlin narrats the whole story to young Arthur, who has just taken the sword from the stone and become king.
it is a two fold story, in which Arthur learns of his true orgins.
Kevin kline narrats the story and does a good job.
this is defitly a good movie for young viewers who like King Arthur.
it also is a much more faithful version of the orginal legends then other movies and series
such as the miniseries Merlin with Sam Neil or the BBC Merlin series.
Merlin and the Dragons is far better then those series because it preserves the orignal legend and retells it quit well.

Excellent- A classic, May 26, 2010
I remember this from when I was a young child- I'm 20 now and for years I had scenes from this movie running through my head, but could not figure out which one it was. Finally I came upon it and its as good now as then. A hard to find dvd.
