Book Description

December 23, 1999
A selection of short stories written by William Somerset Maugham. 3 cassette tapes (Unabridged: 3 hours, 42 minutes).

This volume includes the following unabridged works with music and sound effects:

THE OUTSTATION is the simple tale of two men who, locked in bitter enmity, must nevertheless somehow get along in a remote British colonial outpost in post World War I Borneo. Mr. Warburton is the classic Edwardian snob. His new assistant, Cooper, is a crude bully. As tension between the two men increases, tragedy lurks. This is one of the greatest short stories in the English language!

APPEARANCE & REALITY is an amusing story of a wealthy Frenchman and his new mistress. He is quite proud of his new conquest until he discovers there is a catch to the relationship.

THE THREE FAT WOMEN OF ANTIBES is an extremely funny tale of three very large women and their attempt to maintain dietary discipline in the face of an unexpected challenge. Friendships are strained to the breaking point.

MR. KNOW-ALL displays Maugham's gift for humor with a subtle touch. A gadfly passenger on board a ship makes a nuisance of himself, but displays the supreme virtue of compassion in a situation that demands the ultimate in self-control and sacrifice. A masterpiece!

FRENCH JOE is a very powerful tale of an expatriot Frenchman whose amazing adventures in life seem to count for nothing. His emotional death-bed confessions on a godforsaken South Pacific island are evocative and fascinating. But the wry conclusion is pure Maugham.

MASTERSON, set in Southeast Asia, is filled with human compassion and poignancy. It is the story of a colonial whose search for a housekeeper lands him in an ardent attachment to a local native woman who wants more than he is prepared to bestow.

About the Author

WILLIAM SOMERSET MAUGHAM, (1874 - 1965), was born at the height of British Imperial power. When he died at the age of 91, the British Empire was all but a memory. In Maugham's lifetime, as his civilization slowly disappeared, people from all walks of life - the proud, the urbane, the crude, the desperate - passed beneath the lens of his dispassionate scrutiny. They re-emerged in his short stories as some of the most unforgettable literary characters of the 20th century. No other writer possessed his keen ability of observation. It was an ability so well honed that his work makes you feel as if you have been drawn into an intimate conversation with the century's most arresting and sophisticated personality.

From AudioFile

This recording took first prize for classic fiction at this year's Audie Awards, and I've never experienced such a happy marriage of prose, performance, and production. Maugham's words are chosen with exquisite skill. Charlton Griffin brings each character to life with a voice both subtle and compelling. Ordinarily, I abhor the use of sound effects in serious fiction, but like parsley on a dish, this background garnishes and never interferes or detracts. Brief musical passages are used as punctuation. On shipboard, we hear a live band, the rattle of crockery. These pieces were written before style had defeated craftsmanship in the battle for short fiction. Each is a clockwork masterpiece. B.H.C. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award. 5.0 out of 5 stars Master Story Teller - Master Reader, November 11, 2001
This review is from: The Short Stories of William Somerset Maugham, Volume I (3 Audio Cassettes) (Audio Cassette)
Charlton Griffin delivers renditions of Somerset Maugham's hauntingly brilliant short stories with the reading and dramatization talent that is equal to the genius of the writer. I have been a fan of Maugham since college, where I read most of these stories because they were assigned in my literature courses at Emory University. Mr. Griffin's love of the literature is clear as he brings these stories to life in such a way that I dare say would curl old Somerset's toes. If you like to listen, don't miss this, it is a gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new experience in audio books, September 28, 2001

This 2001 award-winning audio book was the debut performance for Audio Connoisseur. You'd never guess the refined, British voice of narrator/actor Charlton Griffin was Georgia-bred. The subtle and well-chosen audio track adds color and emotional dimension to Maugham's classic tales from the waning years of the Pacific-rim colonial era. Audio Connoisseur is setting a new standard in audio books. Highly recommended!
