5.0 out of 5 stars A Different look at World War II
I am a huge fan of history. I love to read historical fiction, mainly, but every now and again, I will pick up something else. I was given "Love Stories of World War II" as a gift and I am by no means disappointed. In a time when the world was at war and death and dying was a harsh reality, some people were falling in love. 3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Writing, Good Stories
I feel a little unpatriotic to dare give this book only 3 stars, but there you go.

5 stars for the cover, I mean who isn't going to just fall over in love with the World War II couple giving their last hug to each other before they part for a long time.

Another 5 stars for the whole idea; love stories in letters, accounts, and photographs during...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different look at World War II, December 27, 2001
I am a huge fan of history. I love to read historical fiction, mainly, but every now and again, I will pick up something else. I was given "Love Stories of World War II" as a gift and I am by no means disappointed. In a time when the world was at war and death and dying was a harsh reality, some people were falling in love. Larry King has done an excellent job of putting this book together, keeping with facts and mementos of the couples in the book. Rather then sweeting it up, their stories are told with excerpts from letters and the histories behind the love. It is not mushy stuff, just simple stories of love in a time of war.

I am very pleased with this book and I would recommend it to any history fan. It reminds me of the love my grandparents share, having a similar story to some of those told in the book. And it leaves me with a strong sense of love and devotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, February 22, 2002
I was given this book as a Valentine's Day gift by my boyfriend at the dawn of our relationship. He is an Army officer and I am in training to be one as well, and as such, we are often separated by our respective training. In this current time of war uncertainty and world instability, the stories in this book serve as a poingnent reminder of what we are living and fighting for every day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift, March 2, 2002

I bought this book for my mother. My father is a world war II vet. She tells me it brought back many memories - some happy, some sad. Overall, she really enjoyed it. I would recommend it as a great gift for parents and grandparents who lived through it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Writing, Good Stories, December 13, 2011
I feel a little unpatriotic to dare give this book only 3 stars, but there you go.

5 stars for the cover, I mean who isn't going to just fall over in love with the World War II couple giving their last hug to each other before they part for a long time.

Another 5 stars for the whole idea; love stories in letters, accounts, and photographs during World War II.

Alas, 3 stars for the execution of the project. Larry King has taken an amazing part of history and the lives of real people who loved during World War II and made a bit of a mess of it. King's writing is poor and it ruins the telling.

These lovely couples deserved better than Larry King let loose without a good editor.

Buy the book if you are willing to forgive bad writing for a good story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly written, November 25, 2011
This review is from: Love Stories Of World War Ii
I feel like everybody loves this book because it contains the words "World War II", "Love", and "Stories" in the title. Sure, the stories themselves are nice, but there are hardly any details. This reads like a poorly written book report from a 4th grader because of the redundant sentence structure and lack of depth! I thought the most interesting parts of this book were the pictures, and halfway through I just started skipping the text and going straight for them. I was surprised that there weren't any stories about nurses falling for their patients, or forbidden loves, like an American falling for a German or something. There was a story about an Italian girl marrying an American soldier that I thought was interesting but the delivery lacked life. Don't waste your money on this book, go to a library and read it if you must.

I bought a copy for myself and one for my Grandmother. We called each other once a week to discuss the stories. She shared her own WWII love story and some letters from my Grandfather. It was a great to have this book as a conversation piece. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Still Makes the World Go Around, July 3, 2009
Love Stories of World War II intrigued me because my husband is a World War II veteran. The book was interesting, making history come alive from a woman's point of view. Also was heartbreaking as well as heartwarming.

I loved this book. I was very surprised that it was compiled by Larry King, but it was so good. Hearing the sweet love stories about whirl wind romances I loved it and have loaned it out several times!
