Barry Pain's Stories in the Dark,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stories in the Dark (Paperback)
Although he's been known as a humorist writer. He's also written some of the weird tales that border on the cosmic, the supernatural, and sometimes the psychological.
"Diary Of a God" is definitely a psychological tale of dread and menace where the man believed he has attained certain attributes toward "godhood." However, things didn't exactly go well as he had expected. "The Moon Slave" where a woman dreaded waiting for her lover to return for one more dance under the full moon. "The Green Light" is where conscience can get the better of he who committed a crime. In "The Undying Thing," maybe one should reconsider accepting any such invitations to stay at such place where stories were said about somebody or something lurking about. That is, something very dangerous. Pain doesn't come out and say exactly what they were. The reader has to figure it out for himself from most of his stories. That's not to say they're not scary enough. They are. They bring about a certain unease after you finished reading them. Just don't expect blood and gore jack-in-the-box scares. |
