3.0 out of 5 stars Technical Glitch March 4, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I am not in any way dissing Billy Joel or the Storm Front album... in fact I've bought at least 6 copies of it, if not more.

However, for people who might care, I'd advise skipping the Remastered version for one reason.... in the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" there is a 1 second technical glitch of computer garble. (Which if I remember correctly was also repeated on GH3, and on available copies in mp3.)

The original Storm Front album did not have the glitch. So unless you're buying it purely for some other reason, I'd advise purchasing the original release over the remastered one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Joel rocks the house! April 18, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is the only Billy Joel album I own. I could never get into any of his other stuff. This album came out when I was in middle school, and I heard 'We didn't start the fire', and 'I go to extremes' on the radio and was hooked. I bought the album and loved all the songs! I bought this copy to replace my old copy. This album is still great to this day! The songs are very upbeat and rock! ***Highly recommended***

With the help of producer Mick Jones, the guitarist from Foreigner, Billy Joel went in a power-pop direction on "Storm Front." The punchy and energetic tunes "That's Not Her Style" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" both establish a swaggering and urgent tone right away -- but the best tracks on this CD are the quieter ones with piano at the forefront. Some of these songs definitely sound like they were written, recorded, produced and released in the late 1980s, but it's unfair to pigeonhole this entire 1989 record as overproduced and too glossy for its own good. "Leningrad," for example, is as beautiful as anything Joel has ever written. The song is a tender, mournful snapshot of a Russian man named Viktor, a "child of war" who lived through the gloom of Communism to find eventual joy. Joel eloquently sums up Viktor's life and sublimely encapsulates a segment of post-World War II Russian life as if it were a musical history lesson. It's a truly striking song, with lyrics that tug at the heart.

For every canned-pop tune on this CD -- "Shameless," "Storm Front" and "When in Rome" come foremost to mind -- there are ones like the sweeping and sea-laden "The Downeaster `Alexa'" and heartfelt "Leningrad" that save it from `80s insignificance. And with the tranquil "And So It Goes," Joel saved the best for last -- despondent lyrics and a lush-sounding piano; it's a heartrending song about inevitable divorce, which, given the way Joel defends his well-known lady on the opening track, is a surprising way to go out.

"Storm Front" sparkles and pops with probably the topmost bells and whistles that musical production could offer at the time, but the music ultimately lacks the heart, drive and soul of Billy's best work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it when I had it before. July 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My copy somehow went missing and I am slowly replacing my library of his songs. This one has a great many "folk" type songs, but modern problems are covered rather than using the old standards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Storm front: Billy Joel's transition to the 90's. July 5, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Storm front was released in 1989 and represents a different style to his easier work such as "The Stranger" or "An Innocent Man". The production is much more lush and it feels more like a studio only album. It's best know for songs such as I go to extremes or "Downeaster Alexa" but is probably best known for "We didn't start the fire" which is also my favourite song on the album. I don't think it's his best album but it fits well into my Billy Joel playlist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Part of Joel's Hit And Miss Period June 6, 2014
By Joelfan
Format:Audio CD
For the most part, i think music fans and Joel fans agree that Billy's best recordings are found in the period between 1975 and 1982. Certainly his best "complete" albums can be found there in that period. The Storm Front album continued the slightly downward progression in Joel's writing abilities after The Nylon Curtain. Like always there's a few good songs to be found on Storm Front - The Downeaster Alexa is one of his best songs for any period, We Didn't Start The Fire had a kick to it and became the big hit for the album, the title song had a nice slow groove to it and provided a nice set opener for the tour that followed (why he never plays it anymore I don't know). But as with all of Joel's post-Nylon Curtain (1982) albums, there's about half an album that's either bland or flat out bad. That's Not Her Style and I Go To Extremes are passable rock songs (nothing great but not too bad) and And So It Goes stays just far away enough from sentimental sap. But songs like When In Rome, Shameless, and State Of Grace are wretched. And Leningrad, although an admirable effort, is pretty boring as a song....jut kind of lays there musically. Again, like The Bridge, while Storm Front is by no means terrible album, it also doesn't compare well to Billy's best albums.

Does Billy Joel write bad music? I think not. Some songs just have more genius than others. Just another example of is talent.

I listen to this as I am doing the dreaded cleaning and it is sufficiently lively at times and sad at others to distract me as I work through the job of cleaning the house.

My original CD was lost in a move and I wanted a replacement without paying the iTunes price. I'm a fan of Billy Joel but only two songs on this album I really like.

If Amazon allowed half stars, I'd give this 4 1/2. Of Billy Joel's final 3 pop albums (The Bridge, Storm Front, River of Dreams), this is by far his most solid effort. Read more
