Book Description

Logan Wolf is a ghost-hunting witch who helps Little Rock's Special Unit on supernatural and occult crimes. When she's called in to investigate a scene that seems strangely familiar, she finds herself in a race against time to capture a killer with paranormal power and evil origins.

To make matters worse, Logan and her friends are battling Palmira, an insane werefox queen who's taking advantage of the murders to further her own plans for power. When Logan's twin brother is pulled into the fight with Palmira, Logan must unleash the full force of her unruly magick to save him, and all of Little Rock. Even if it means incurring the wrath of the feared Elders' Council along the way...

2.0 out of 5 stars Promising talent, not quite there yet March 15, 2011

Over on another book thread that I hang out at, a very nice person asked for reviewers for this book, and I volunteered. First, I am always looking for something new and different to read. Second, at first blush, this looked like exactly my favorite sort of brain twinkie -- I love a good, gritty, noir urban fantasy with a hero (or heroine) out there kicking supernatural heinie and taking names. And, I adore $0.99 downloads -- some of the best books I've read have been $0.99 downloads!

As I stated in the other thread, I'm not a professional reviewer, I'm just a reader. But, I read a lot!

And...well, I didn't finish the book. I can't finish the book because it's just not ready for primetime yet. And, quite frankly, I'm not sure this book will ever be. I'm sure that other efforts by the author might bear fruit, but in my opinion Logan here is best thrown to the wolves.

Why so harsh?

Well, to begin with, this isn't 'inspired' by Anita Blake, or 'influenced' by Anita Blake -- this is Anita Blake in a wolf skin. And, what's worse, it's Anita Blake right around maybe 'Cerulean Sins' and on down, not the gritty, noir AB stuff. Instead of ardeur, we have 'feedback'. (I think that's what it was called -- too lazy to go look). We even have a love interest that smells like vanilla. We have some classic trademark LKH crutches, up to and including 'things low and tight in my body tightened', and long detailed descriptions of everyone's clothing. Said long detailed descriptions tend to be pretty pat descriptions, too.

In addition, I found the typos and other errors to be distracting. That is totally to be expected in a self-published book, but this could have stood one more look. Even at that, I will stick it out with an engaging story even if it's rife with typos, and I just couldn't find anything engaging here.

I suspect that if the author could work more towards finding her own voice and own characters, she would turn out something wonderful. But, both as a novel on its own or even considered as an homage to Anita Blake, I'm afraid this falls short.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Read December 12, 2010

If you like early Laurell K. Hamilton, Marjorie M. Liu, and Kim Harrison, you'll enjoy this debut novel from L.A. Burton which, although a bit rough around the edges, packs a neat supernatural story about a witch who gets involved with lycanthropes and has to deal with the consequences.

4.0 out of 5 stars One to Watch! July 17, 2012

Full of familiar elements to any fan of the supernatural, vamps, were's and a tough chica, this still manages to be both a fresh and interesting read.

Definitely worth checking out and I for one can't wait for the next instalment!

More About the Author

LA wasn't your normal child. She's dreamed of vampires and werewolves ever since she was a little girl. The only weird thing is - they didn't scare her. Her looks were decieving. People think she's nice and unassuming, but underneath she was always dark and twisted, with pink around the edges. Nothing has changed.

All grown up now, L.A. can be found researching and writing her novels. In her spare time she's writing spells, reading tarot cards, and practicing witchcraft. L.A. lives in Ohio with her family, cat (Crysie), the ghost of her late cat (Cougar) and a Jack Russell Terrier (Piper), which keeps her busy.
