Excellent big band jazz,

Not only have I purchased the record (back when it was on vinyl) I attended the concert and had Maynard autograph my record for me. The music is vintage big-band Maynard Ferguson, which is a plus or a minus, depending on your perspective. The choice of music varied, the performances are tight, and the sound quality is good. This is after his "pop" phase in the late 70's, which is a plus. I prefer live recordings, which is why it did not recieve 5 stars from me. A good addition to a collection if you need some good Maynard while he still had a full touring big band. I have enjoyed this record for over fifteen years.

This album is one of the greatest in-your-face jazz cd's that I have ever listened to. It displays Maynard's superb and unclassified range on the trumpet. The album is also richly diversified in its music selections composed of latin, rock, and swing style pieces. It is a truly great accomplishment of jazz literature.

I'm an avid jazz player and a fan of any kind of jazz. My old band director led me toward this CD, and now its one of the most listned to songs on my mp3 player! A good mixture of upbeat, funky, and classic jazz, this CD is a great listen no matter what kind of jazz your looking for. My only complaint, if I had any, would be that Maynard is screaming in the stratosphere about 99.9% of the time. In his defense though, I feel like the licks and riffs that he pulls off at those insane levels are extremely tasteful and fit the style perfectly. All in all, this is a GREAT buy!

After having the opportuity to see and to play with Maynard live, I have to recomand that every Jazz student should own either this CD or another of his. Knowing the abilities of him and his musicians it is amazing to listen to a living legend. So I hope everyone can experience some Maynard Ferguson.

This is one of the best Maynard CDs out there. "Take the 'A' train" is great. Maynard is amazing. I love this CD.

Solid, but not Fantastic,

This album is a good illustration of both the strengths and weaknesses of Maynard's style. He is certainly a great jazz legend and jazz educator, but whether this album is an unqualified masterpiece is something else. I have seen him live before, and I was very impressed by that experience, but still, his music has a bit too much pop and not enough raw substance. Maynard can certainly go octaves above mere mortals, but when it comes to actual content in his solos, he is easily upstaged by mny other fine jazz trumpeters, i.e. Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, etc., and even his own bandmates. Though he is a great ambassador for jazz, his music lacks, to a degree, maturity, which is very much in evidence on this album.
