Between 1992 and 1996, media correspondent Charles van der Leeuw lived and travelled in the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. In this unique narrative he documents the suffering of millions as a result of wars and hardship inflicted by ruthless pressure groups, both local and foreign, most of which have remained unaccountable. He explains how the wave of shady business dealings, political intrigues and traumatic turmoil is but one more of the countless stages in the long history of struggle and counter-struggle of this geographical crossroads, and for which no end seems to be in sight, given the area's immeasurable economic potential and strategic position.
