5.0 out of 5 stars Real and honest recounting of perillous climb in The Pamirs, in former Soviet Union., October 31, 2011
This review is from: Storm & Sorrow in the High Pamirs (Hardcover)
Robert Craig suffered a great loss during this climb. . . in this story. . . and it was heartfelt and honestly portrayed. This book recounts the old style of Alpine climbing expeditions and ,in my opinion, therefore is much more adventurous, compelling and heart-rendering than the newer style of "conquering" mountains. Detailed and written by a brave, veteran of climbs on K2 back in the earlier days of now famous Sherpas and true mountain-called, noted adventurers from true pioneering days of man's challenging the worlds's tallest and most forbidding mountains. I enjoyed reading this straight-forward rendering of "Storm and Sorrow" from a veteran Alpine adventurer and connecting with the challenge of climbing in the Pamirs, especially during the days of, still somewhat tense, detente relationships between USA and USSR. I recommend this book for its raw truth, and recognize the underlying, subtly written, tenuous sense of shock still felt by author, Robert Craig, at the time of this writing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bland, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Storm & Sorrow in the High Pamirs (Hardcover)
A rather straight forward narrative of the first American expedition to the Pamirs in the former Soviet Russian in the 70's. A lot of death on this expedition, but the telling of it is rather bland. Overall uninteresting unless you are interested in the history of mountaineering. Roskelley and Jeff Lowe were on this expedition.
