This book is so lovely. I really liked the sweet simplicity of the prose and the gorgeousness of the illustrations. This author has a deep understanding of how small children think, how they see the world--the loneliness theyfeel when a parent goes off to work; the wonder they feel at walking the beach after a storm; the sense of urgency and importance they feel while doing something important in secret and trying not to get caught lest they be misunderstood by an adult; and how they process their emotions through painting. This book is just so darling and unusual and special.

A beautiful book! The simplicity of the story and its message, coupled with the lush illustrations provide a wonderful experience for the beginning reader or a special, "read-to-me" moment for those who still need a bit of help.

Thank goodness I bought two copies of this book because otherwise I wouldn't have a gift for my nephew. Everything about this book is wonderful. I love the artist's palette and each page is beautiful. The text is spare, but perfect. There are so many wonderful details to enjoy -- a cat peeking out from its position on a shelf, the two mugs and cookies that Noi has set out for himself and his rescued whale, the texture of rain falling on the sea, and so much more. Adults and children will cherish this book.

This is a wonderful story with delightful art work that has captured the attention of both my 2 and a half and 5 year old grandchildren. The story is just about long enough to keep the attention of both kids and has an easily understood message. I can only admire the talent of authors and artists who create children's stories with such flair and such child-like intuition!

Love, love, LOVE this book. Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful story. I love reading it as much as our 2yr old son loves having it read to him. Strongly recommend.
