From the Publisher

Continental Stormrider Guides are designed as useful tools for surfers to increase their knowledge and understanding of the coastal fringes of Earth’s largest land masses. The subtleties of this dynamic zone, where land meets sea, shape the waves which create the places where surfing is practiced and defined. More than just directories of surf spots, Stormrider Guides include illuminating appraisals of the ocean and beach environment along with authoritative discussions of the surf culture that feeds off this interaction.

North America is perhaps the most fertile surf continent on this watery planet. Its immense littoral range is washed by the mightiest oceans, gulfs, and lakes. Here, a surfer will discover an endless supply of wave-riding possibilities. But all of this wealth is jeopardized both by natural cycles and by man’s continuing poor stewardship of the vulnerable ocean environment.

With its far-reaching exploration of the pioneering American surfers and innovators, this book is a celebration of the rich mosaic of modern surf culture in North America. This diverse tribe of surfers cherish equally the warm beachbreaks of Florida, the icy reef waves of Lake Superior, the chill wilderness peaks of Alaska or the crowded pointbreaks of Southern California. Each is chasing a taste of perfection, each one wants the free ride. Remember this wherever you go – get wet, give thanks, and share a smile. That is surfing’s reward.

More About the Author

Low Pressure is and always has been a company devoted to surf and travel. Expanding horizons and highlighting the potential of a world of waves is the whole point of our business. We have all been lucky enough to experience a huge diversity of waves, people and cultures on our own personal travels, so sharing the stoke of discovery seems to be the right thing to do.

The Stormrider Guides have been the end product of this devotion. They are very slow to produce... sometimes too slow, but this is simply because we do not want to put out anything that is slapped together to make a quick buck.....we surf and travel and we know what we want to see in a book. So far this seems to have worked as our Stormrider books are the best selling and best known surf guides in the world.

It's always difficult to get the balance right with a surf guide. Often considered a taboo subject we have done everything we possibly can to give accurate and comprehensive information without taking away the thrill of discovery. In order to do this, all our information is contributed by and double checked by local riders. If you feel we've crossed the line please contact us and give us your constructive criticism.

While presenting the surf info we try to remove opinion and personalities from the books to leave the hard and fast facts. The stars of The Stormrider Guides are the waves themselves...all we do is try to present them in a clear and consistent fashion. One surfer's 5 star wave is another surfer's nightmare. The style is adapted to this approach - it is only a guide....you do the rest.

Bruce Sutherland is a director of Low Pressure, the Publishing Editor of The Stormrider Surf Guide series of books and has 35 years extensive experience of surfing and travelling.
Contributions also come from the Low Pressure team of Ollie Fitzjones and Dan Haylock, as well as numerous respected surf journalists including Antony Colas, who has travelled across the world, surfing in over 55 countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st and only comprehensive guide to surfing North America, September 5, 2002
By
outsider01 (San Francisco, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stormrider Guide North America (Stormrider Guides) (Paperback)
This book explains how waves are formed, provides information on forecasting surf conditions, and provides insider information into surf culture. It will help beginners get a clue on how things work in the water and provide those of us with experience the ability to travel outside of familiar territory to explore new spots. Ideal conditions are listed for every break in North America: ideal swell direction, wind direction, swell size, type of break (beach, reef, river mouth, point break, etc), and more.

A must have for surfers.
