2.0 out of 5 stars confusing console style interface, March 25, 2009

I was looking foward to the game. we need more true 3d RTS. i dont see how they can say they are the "first true" 3d RTS. homeworld was in 3d as are a lot of other such games.

the problem with this game is that for the PC version they forgo the easy to use mouse movement as in most other RTS which a camera always centered on the unit you have sort of feel. you cant drag and drop you cant do any of the traditoinal mouse /keyboard uses like other rts's . for a game thats made by the makers of the total war series. i would have hoped to done a bettr job.

also starting a game with a "manditory" dumbed down tutorial is boring.

the whole game screams console port. they should have fococed on making the pc interface work for the pc stead of just ripping the controlls off the console versions.

also i am not sure if its me but the aspect ratio for the game seems a bit off in non widescreen mode it just seems like things are scrunched together a bit.

so glad i did not waste[..] on this but played it from a friend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total failure, January 27, 2010

It's a storm alright, the imperfect storm. This came is a mix of TPS and RTS. The control system for your units is slightly similar to the old Battlezone games.

I got this game for free, it came with an ASUS board I bought. I'm very thankful I didn't pay for it as it is incredibly difficult to PLAY the actual game.

Pros:
-Graphics are amazing, got to give them credit for the work there
-Units and characters are pretty well done and interesting to use

On the fence:
Story line is ok, nothing special but not bad.

Cons:
-The interface is HORRIBLE!!!! You are essentially in a third person mode issuing commands to units in an RTS style game. If the world was flat this would be fine, but it's not. Getting units up on to high places is very tedious. Also, unit selection uses their "WHIP" control, where you use a clock style control to pick items from their relative direction to your view. WHIP is not nearly as sensitive, granular, or user friendly as it should be for a fast paced RTS.
-You control your view by moving the mouse, but you have to move the mouse to order units where to move or attack. So, as you are trying to put the cursor on a destination, the camera is moving, and the destination is constantly changing. Very frustrating.
-Units just flat out ignore your commands. That's right, you want us to dig in? What? Did you say dig in? I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that. So they just stand there and get shot.
-Grouping of units is garbage and doesn't work right half the time.

Overall, even if you get this game for free, I wouldn't recommend playing it because it's actually "unplayable."

2.0 out of 5 stars frustrating and irritating command interfaces, January 13, 2010
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Stormrise (DVD-ROM)
Designed to be an RTS that was accessible for console audiences, Stormrise overall presents one of the most frustrating and irritating command interfaces adapted for any strategy game. It's further let down by its bland designs and story, but ultimately both of those failings pale in comparison to how terrible the gameplay is.

The game is a fairly conventional RTS by a lot of standards - you command units of space marines or rebels with occasional vehicles or mechs. The game uses the "whip" system - you hold down the right mouse button, move it in the direction of the unit you wish to select, and release. The camera then snaps to that unit; orders are issued using the left mouse button. It works about as well as it sounds - even with a (really terrible) tactical overview map, the fact that you can't zoom in or out makes getting a complete tactical picture nearly impossible, and you're forced to fight the awkward viewpoint to try to get your units to cover.

This is compounded by the fact that it means you have to give units orders one at a time. Considering that fights in this game are determined almost entirely by firepower (and a few lame cover mechanics), this is a bit of a problem. When you throw in fairly standard RTS unit numbers, it swells up to be nearly unplayable. The "direct units from a close-in viewpoint" system was difficult to use in Full Spectrum Warrior, but in a game like this - with fairly huge numbers of units - it's ultimately just an exercise in slow-paced frustration. You can't even use any real tactics or anything; all you're doing is moving units forward one at a time instead of as a group.

The graphics are fairly nice, though the whole basic concept (space marines versus hooded rebels) is bland and boring. The camera has a sort of neat shakycam effect when following infantry units, but that only serves to point out how frustrating the controls and view are. The sound isn't great, and the voice acting is mediocre at best. Ultimately not even hardcore sci-fi or strategy fans should touch this game - it's just not good at anything.

Rating: 3/10

1.0 out of 5 stars Vista only? Epic fail, March 25, 2009

There is no game review here so if you want that look at other reviews. The development decision to make this Vista/DX10 only is supremely shortsighted. When the vast majority of the Windows population still use XP and a vast majority of XP users have no intention to "upgrade" to Vista means that the developers have just cut off the head of the PC market without even trying. How a developer can do that boggles my mind. Perhaps they want to do this to justify that there isn't a market for PC games so there is no point to make cross-platform games for the PC in the future.

Hey, this may be a good game for all I know, but I'll never know since I refuse to "upgrade" to Vista.
