5.0 out of 5 stars cursive at their finest.
this album could not be any better. my favorite album by one of my all-time favorite bands. i would recommend this over "the ugly organ" any day, but i love everything this band does. this record was great because it was so raw and even almost sloppy at times..some of the best guitar/drum work in indie rock exists here.

3.0 out of 5 stars cursive-all their cds are good
it's good. Some of the songs I recognized from partially downloaded albums and other piece-meal compilations but it's nice to have all the songs. It's not as good as their last two albums though. If you can snag it for cheap ten do so. If you're one of those people that have to have every album that a band puts out then fine. Otherwise it's not an album that you...

Although it comes just before Domestica, this is certainly old-style Cursive. More yelling Kasher, but really solid album. I never used to pick this one up, but lately I can't get enough. It really has amazing material that you can grow to appreciate.

If you can snag it for cheap ten do so. If you're one of those people that have to have every album that a band puts out then fine. Otherwise it's not an album that you immediately love. It has to grow on you. It's not as accessible as their new stuff. But some people like that so to each his own. But remember, this album is old. It was way ahead of it's time at the time it was put out. It's a little slow for me now, though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Noticeable beauty around the ugliness, January 11, 2008
This review is from: The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song (Audio CD)
3 1/2

The melodically screeching post-punk outfit's early work was always a bit rough around the edges to say the least, largely accounting for such a gritty allure amongst fans. With some of Storm's more thoughtful compositions though we begin to witness the grinding mechanics of front-man Tim Kasher at times yielding into a kinder, gentler thing, which does contrast their wrenching sonic bursts all the more effectively and hinted at the impressive evolution which was to follow.

3.0 out of 5 stars What about the new one?, September 23, 2007

I just wanted to point out that unless the product description reviewer hates the last three albums Cursive has put out, and declared them broken up, or they just haven't updated it yet, but as you can probably tell, Cursive has not broken up. It's lame that amazon hasn't changed the description yet and it can be confusing to new fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing amazing.., March 5, 2004

This is a good CD. But it is just good.
I don't know what it is about this CD, but I just didn't love it. I wasn't blown away. There are certain parts in the songs that are great but the songs themselves aren't. Instead try buying "Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes" or "Cursive's Domestica"

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this one, let's just turn to "Proposals", May 26, 2000
This review is from: The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song (Audio CD)
The moment I got this album I thought, "God this is way better than seeing them live!" The reeason, I love the vocals how they are so very raw, but at times... these vocals can be horribly hard to understand live. I liked this album a bit more than Such Blinding Stars because it was a bit more polished.

But the reason that I love Cursive so much is because of their lyrical wit. They are amazing, they strike at the bone... these lyrics make me twist up into the sheets of my bed. "Proposals" is my favorite track, I am not sure why... the others compete just as much, but the first time I heard Proposals I was in love...

And I know this really isn't something that should be considered... but I am an art major and I do a lot of graphic arts... so I will just have to say that I love the layout of their lyrics book, the way the cover looks, the picture they chose to put on their cd all of it...

I am not sure if you will like this, and when I first heard it I wasn't sure if I did. It took me until "Proposals" to fall in love with this album, and then I started the whole thing over again and took thier mastery into consideration, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cursive fans you can't over look this gem!!!!, July 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song (Audio CD)
Cursive's second album is a great piece of musicianship. Lets over the album.

The Rhyme Scheme - Brilliant lyrics! I love the desperacy in Tim's voice on this. Great Opener! 9/10

A Career in Transcendence - 2:18 shortest track and I'm glad it is it just doesn't work and seems to be a filler. 3/10

The Road to Financial Stability - I LOVE THE RIFF! It simple but I love the way it builds in the end when Tim Kasher yells "Don't tell me This is it!" Great song 9/10

Tempest - The vocals by Tim get on my nerves on this one which is a shame cause it started out so good. 4/10

Break In The New Year -

Proposals - AWESOME SONG!!! really good, I can't praise it enough. Everything is strong from lyrics to musianship. May just be the best song on here. 10/10

Semantics of Sermon - Great song, love the riff on this one too. The beautiful desperacy in Tim's Voice continues with the great lyrics. 9/10

Little Song and Dance - Wow, this is such an underrated song! Heavy and poinient song, this is my favorite off the album. 10/10

When Summer's over will we dream of spring? - Keeps the great run of songs going and goes deeper into the meaning of this cd. 9/10

Northern Winds - Good song it could be a little better. 6/10

Absence Makes the Day Go Longer - The lyrics could have been a little bit better to end the theme of the album and it could have been a little more climatic. Still its pretty good. I think it gets a little tired at Northern Winds. 6/10

Overall it gives us 6 REALLY strong songs and the album has a great theme it seems like a concept album. I could give my thoughts on what I think its about but that will just tarnish it. This is for you to discover and feel its meaning. It's a great album no cursive fan can go without. Its not as strong as Domestica and Ugly Organ but its still 5 star material.

3.0 out of 5 stars good but not even close, June 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song (Audio CD)
When i first heard Cursive's "such blinding stars for starving eyes" (first LP) I was thrown off my feet and amazed by it. I then learned about the second album and ordered it quickley, assured by other reviews that i had read that it had "blown their first album out of the water". No, this album does not even come close to there first one. "Early Storms" is very good but, i think that there are magor flaws in the recording of it. Especially the snare drum, sorry to be picky but the drum sounds on there first album are incredible. Second of all the songs on this album towards the end drag like syrup. It lacks the anthem type sound that the first one had. But don't get me wrong, this is no sophmore slump. But if your going to buy this album, get the first one first.
