This review is from: Stormy Monday: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
An entertaining movie from Mike Figgis, with a very bluesy and enjoyable soundtrack. B.B. King's version of the title song (made famous, of course, by King's major rival in the mid-to-late 20th century world of commercial blues, Bobby "Blue" Bland), is truly excellent - making a song that has been done to death in every way possible sound fresh and vital one more time. The rest of the music is really good too, although there are a few humorous pieces that might seem a little weird out of context. Nevertheless, this is an album that any listener with sophisticated taste could put on the stereo and enjoy listening to on a drizzly spring night. Figgis is himself a fine musician (in addition to being a brilliant, if controversial filmmaker (Leonard Maltin hates most of his work), and it shows in both the material he selects, and in the music he writes and performs with others for his soundtracks. Sting does a great job as an almost-likeable club owner (he has obviously observed many of this species up close over the years - he nails the role with subtlety!), Tommy Lee Jones makes a good American villain, and Sean Bean is a boyish hero who rescues Melanie Griffith from her indentured sexual servitude. Good British Noir. Check out Figgis film "Hotel" also, for a real, wild, cinematic adventure!
