Editorial Reviews

It's a tall order to describe Leatherface in a single paragraph, given the seemingly monumental footprint they've left on our little world of DIY punk rock. They encompass everything there is to love about independent music - inventing a trademarked and unmistakable playing style, influencing and inspiring dozens of bands who have since risen to the top of the heap, and always maintaining their humility and integrity. Renowned for Stubbs' weathered yet melodic rasp and soaring Gordon Smith guitars, Leatherface (commonly referred to as The Boat) champion the working stiff above all else, a testament to their Sunderland heritage and unflinching perseverance. No CD export to Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Let me start by saying that Leatherface is one of the greatest punk bands of the last 20 years, and this new record shows why.
It's sound is much like their last two records, 2000's Horsebox and 2004's Dog Disco. Their great signature sound (duel, inter-twining guitar melodies, Frankie Stubbs' strange, sometimes absurd, metaphoric lyrics sung passionately through his soar-throat vocals) is still going strong, and is still as intriguing and inspiring as it ever was.
To me, Leatherface is like a newer version of Stiff Little Fingers. They've been in the game for over 20 years now. They've managed to inspire countless audiences/ new bands. And despite the fact that they're under-apprectiated and aging, they still tour in the underground circuit doing what they love regardless of their so-called status among 'the scene' and what's age-apppropriate.
This is all well articulated on 'Petrel', and it shows that 'The Boat' is gonna keep sailing as long as they can.

Now, on to the price of this disc. This version is an import, and I'm pretty sure it's the same as the copy I bought at the bands' gig a month ago. If so, it's the second release on the band's new label, Big Ugly Fish (the first one was a 7" split between them and Yesterday's Ring). The C.D.s were pressed onto red or black discs that were made to look like tiny L.P.s. The price may be a little steep, but it's a nice collector's item to have if you're a fan.
If none of this is of interest, those fine hipsters at No Idea Records will be releasing a much cheaper stateside version on both C.D. and vinyl.

Verily the Stormy Petrel sails high above crashing waves, from its catchy opening bop, woven like tightly knotted rope, swaying in the wind from a crow's nest commandeered by Captain Stubbs, who sights land but it's the world's end, where Diego Garcia's been cleared of natives for the sake of building another American disgrace; in a world where God is dead, definitely dead, it's enough to keep me from giving up hope.
