Product Description

2012 Media of the Year - Creative Child Magazine
"Recommended for reluctant readers" - Digital Storytime
"Gets kids excited about reading" - Tecca
"Extraordinarily creative book app" - Teachers With Apps

You choose how the action unfolds in this interactive book app for kids 8-12. Geared to third- through sixth-graders, Brush of Truth, told in “your” voice, has 65 decision points and 20 possible endings.

At critical points during the story, you’ll be confronted with choices. Choose a path, and the story will go on from there. You’ll face challenges, solve riddles and investigate mysteries. You’ll meet curious characters and explore thrilling new places. Your decisions may lead to a glorious victory or a desperate end.

But have no fear. If you don’t like where your choices lead, start over and choose different actions. It’s all up to you. . .

In Brush of Truth, you and your sister find a crudely-crafted paintbrush on a beach and discover it has magical powers. You soon learn it is the long-lost Brush of Truth, created by a medieval sorcerer to hand off his enchantments to his children. In this book app, you help a sea goddess find the key to the ocean’s dying sea life, explore tunnels under the earth and flee talking vultures. But watch out! Descendants of the evil ruler, Tortura, may be after you.

This book app is the first release by Story Bayou, Inc., a series of interactive book apps for tweens developed by a parent looking to interest kids in reading through the magic of technology.

Story Bayou (a play on “Story by You”) was created and written by Julie Landry Laviolette, a mom of two and longtime journalist. Wanting a little more fun in her life, she decided to create her own.

I had my 13-year-old fighting my 8-year-old to read this book. Must be good.
I flipped through it and was impressed with the thoughtfulness that went into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT alternative to brainless video games!! May 25, 2012

I forgot that I had downloaded storybayou on my phone, and my 9 year old was getting fidgety as we sat in the doctor's office waiting room. I suddenly remembered the app and handed her the phone. She spent twenty-five minutes completely engrossed and was totally annoyed when our name was called to go in the exam room. When we got home, she spent the next hour reading and choosing the different story scenarios. Parents, download this app now!!! You and your tweens will love it! A great alternative to those brainless video games...!

The Brush of Truth is a golden tipped paint brush with magical powers. How it is used and how the story ends depends on the reader's choices. According to the author/creator, there are 65 decision points in this book app, leading to 20 different endings. I will have to take her word for it, as I did not count them as I went along. As I was reading I found that I quite enjoyed making my own decisions about where I wanted the story to go. The illustrations were so awesome that I wanted to find them all.

I was immediately struck by its appeal to middle grade kids. I could well imagine a reluctant reader or any kid who craves technology and loves games being drawn to this app. The author tells me that her eleven year old came up with the system. I applaud both of them. My one criticism is that the text size was quite small. I felt as though I was reading a newspaper, which was a bit off-putting. Being unfamiliar with the technology, I don't know whether the text size can be adjusted as it can in an ordinary ebook.
