Gr. 2-4. These first volumes in the Dogs throughout History series introduce characteristics of and historical anecdotes about each breed. Boxer focuses mostly on the dogs' ancestors, their sporting role in eighteenth-century Europe, and a few stories that reinforce the breed's reputation as loyal and courageous (two spreads feature boxers in the World Wars, for example). Golden Retriever includes a few more hard facts: average weights, qualities of fur, etc. Further pages spotlight the dogs' roles in rescue missions and as guide dogs. The text is slight, and there probably isn't enough here to support reports. But the color photos and historical details will interest dog fanatics. Back matter includes a glossary and Web resources. A very good book if you are interested in the history of dogs. There is another fascinating Boxer in Paws to Protect: Dogs Saving Lives and Restoring Hope.
