This review is from: Story of (Audio CD)
The problem with 1970s AM radio was that you didn't even get ten percent of the story. Top Forty could be awful, but when it was on, man, was it on. For every "I Honestly Love You." by Olivia Newton John or "Playground Of My Mind" there was a "Games People Play,"
by the Spinners. Actually, there was anything and everything by the Spinners. And there was Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose. This band may have only had a few hits, but as you'll hear, whatever the reason was, it was not the music. Listen to "Its Too Late To Turn Back Now." to get an idea of how good this band, and for that matter 1970s AM radio, could be when it aimed high. Lush, sassy, and sweet without a hint of sap, "Its Too Late" is one of those perfect AM soul singles written with each corner beveled and shined: the vocals just right, each violin perfectly mixed, the bridge able to convey conflict, hope and desperation at once. It is like a little classical piece, a little love opera. "Treat Her Like A Lady" works the other side: brief, uptempo, funky, this music works with lushness as funk, not soul, and yeah second lands as perfect in pocket as "Its Too Late" does, with a different approach, but the same craft. And, yeah, "Treat Her Like A Lady," is a little love oprea, too. Most of the tracks here work some variation of the two above tracks, with twists like a 1950s inflected crooning style--and one that works with the singers grit. There is nothing that sticks as memorably as the two hit tracks, but to go deeper into a soul band that may not have gotten deep enough airplay, you can't go wrong with this one.
