This review is from: The Story of a Country Town (Paperback)
This novel is greater than the slicker novels of other writers.
I wish the people who like adventure/blood/guts novels such as "Deliverance" by James Dickey, would try this one out and see what they are missing. This one definitely is a better book for the people who care about families and friendship. In fact while very sad, much sadder than Deliverance, you end up liking the human race at the end of A Country Town quite a bit more than when you have read Deliverance to the end.
For me, the three most interesting people in it were the narrator's mother, and Jo and Mateel Erring.
This book is among my current favorite books, the others being "Profiles of the Future" by Clarke, "Romola" and "Impressions of Theophrastus Such" by Eliot, and "The Mysterious Stranger" by Twain
