The life of legendary University of Texas football coach Darrell Royal, who led his Longhorns to three national titles and 16 bowl games, is profiled in this hourlong documentary narrated by actor Matthew McConaughey. Following an impoverished childhood in the Oklahoma dustbowl of the Great Depression, Royal strove to excel at college football as a player, and his later coaching career would be marked by his insistence that his players pay proper attention to academic pursuits and earn their degrees. A centerpiece of this film is the classic 1969 title game in which Royal's Longhorn team came from behind to beat Arkansas and received congratulations in the locker room from President Richard Nixon. Royal's fans and friends, including Willie Nelson and then-governor George W. Bush, appear to speak of his accomplishments. Simply stated: I was blown away with this video. McConaughey's narration here is obviously on a subject he's very passionate about and, although it's a little known video, it's probably his best work yet. Coach Royal's life is fasincating and it's presented with much savvy and in a very entertaining way. Apparently, the video was made by some Hollywood movie makers who are fans of Texas football...so it's a first class effort. Great, star-studded cast. I loved seeing Willie Nelson talk about Darrell (what an unlikely pair of friends!). I can't say enough great stuff on this one.

For any Longhorn fan of the late sixties. This is a great story about a great coach. But... what really makes the video a 5 star is the story of the "Great Shoot-Out" between Texas and Arkansas for the National Championship with the 1969 team.

Reliving that game is pure "burnt orange" excitement!

Informative, interesting, well written...what more can I say??? If you don't watch this film, you are missing out. I wasn't a UT fan when I watched, but you can bet I've watched every game since! This is a heartwarming story that the whole family can relate to and enjoy.
