Book Description

Story Design helps storytellers craft better stories - by design.

Many stories fail to deliver because they lack conviction and have nothing new to say. Rather than focus on narrative or style, we search for significance and substance. Our methodology creates meaningful stories with a positive social impact; stories that transform AND entertain.

Our 7-step process was developed in partnership with over 300 writers, senior development executives, and Hollywood marketing professionals. It will improve your technique, efficiency and commercial focus.

While this book is written primarily for the screenwriter and the creative producer, it will be invaluable to storytellers of all kinds and in all media.

Readers of the book are welcome to join our Story Design Group community on SEAM ( to use our online tools and perfect their own pitches:

5.0 out of 5 stars A New and Unique Take On Modern Storytelling October 31, 2012
By Dave W
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you're looking for a book to show you how to create and pitch an idea in the modern storytelling marketplace, this is the one. Easy to read and straight to the point, this book guides the reader through steps to create meaningful and deep stories with the intent of pitching them to commercial interests; read: getting paid to produce them. The authors' Hollywood experience shows in each page letting the reader know what the people buying the stories are looking for. The most interesting thing I found as I read the book was that it didn't focus on narrative, but the deeper ideas on why you tell a story. Also the striking idea that genre doesn't matter. If you have a good idea for what is driving the story you can then create a compelling narrative for any genre. It really opened my eyes to a new way of creating stories. I can't wait to apply what I have learned in reading it to my own writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick read guide for writers of any genre March 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Though this is geared toward screenwriters, any person who pens fiction will get something out of it. It has step by step instructions for planning the story before writing it, a useful exercise in any genre. It also has a myriad of concrete examples of the points it makes. It's a quick read, so you can get on with the business of writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful March 2, 2013
By Bingo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although short and a promotion for a commercial business, this handbook helped me think about how to differentiate the "message" of a story from its narrative, in order to flesh out the underlying story. A worthwhile read for any fiction writer, although its geared more for screen writers.
