If you're looking for a book to show you how to create and pitch an idea in the modern storytelling marketplace, this is the one. Easy to read and straight to the point, this book guides the reader through steps to create meaningful and deep stories with the intent of pitching them to commercial interests; read: getting paid to produce them. The authors' Hollywood experience shows in each page letting the reader know what the people buying the stories are looking for. The most interesting thing I found as I read the book was that it didn't focus on narrative, but the deeper ideas on why you tell a story. Also the striking idea that genre doesn't matter. If you have a good idea for what is driving the story you can then create a compelling narrative for any genre. It really opened my eyes to a new way of creating stories. I can't wait to apply what I have learned in reading it to my own writing.

Though this is geared toward screenwriters, any person who pens fiction will get something out of it. It has step by step instructions for planning the story before writing it, a useful exercise in any genre. It also has a myriad of concrete examples of the points it makes. It's a quick read, so you can get on with the business of writing.

I found this a great creative resource as a story writer. Guided by their experience in making Hollywood movies, the Seam team offer a simple, 1-page "Pitch" framework that allows you to think deeply about your story design - before setting off and writing your screenplay (or novel or anyting else for that matter). After all, if your idea doesn't work on one page, it won't work any better by being longer. The Pitch framework was a "necessary ruthlessness" that forced me to cut through distractions and get the essence of my stories on 1 page. I recommend it to anyone who's starting out designing a story (or if you're half-way through something and have lost your way!).
