Book Description

October 9, 2005
Growing up in London in the twenties and thirties, a young man mixes a little extortion with his school work, a little theft with his day job, moving on to the black market during the war, and worse. This allows him to live the life he wants relatively happily, except on a few occasions when his sense of reality takes a nasty jolt.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bad Boy, July 18, 2007
By
This review is from: The Story Of Elijah (Paperback)
This is the strange tale of the most evil person you will ever encounter. Elijah Hakesley was a smart kid, and chooses to use his intellect for his own benefit. He starts off as a school bully, then becomes a thief. As he grows up his transgressions only worsen, and he discovers more fiendish ways to increase his fortune. Where will it end?

The novel is well written, and leads the reader to keep on reading, if only to find out how far Elijah will go next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wickedly Entertaining Read, January 28, 2011
This review is from: The Story Of Elijah (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book immensely. While the narrator is no doubt wicked - his antics involving such things as murder, bullying & thievery, the character of Elijah is so intelligent & witty that his devilish nature is tremendously entertaining.

The author has a flair for setting a scene - this story taking before, during & after WWII in London. The details are clean & vivid, but without any tedious laundry lists of descriptions riddled with painful adverbs & adjectives. The story is engaging & well-written.

This is a fun, quick read & Nicholas Temple-Smith knows how to keep a reader turning the pages. For an American reader like myself, the authentic London voice was delightful & I got a laugh from this book several times. I highly recommend 'The Story of Elijah'.
