In a small Irish village, young Esther Costello, victim of a tragic accident that has left her deaf, dumb and blind, is kept barely alive by hardhearted parents. Discovered by a well-meaning American tourist, who is appalled by Esther's shocking condition, she is whisked away to America for treatment. But all the advances of American medicine are unable to bring about a cure and with unceasing devotion, her patron decides to devote her life to Esther's care. But a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness eventually results in donations being diverted to the woman's personal account, and in a harrowing twist to the tale, Esther's faculties are restored, with shocking consequences.

Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool and educated at Cambridge University, where he studied law. His career as a solicitor encountered a swift end when he decided to leave Liverpool for London, with a half-finished manuscript under his arm and £40 in his pocket. His first book to attract attention was the largely autobiographical 'This is the Schoolroom'. During World War II he joined the Royal Navy and served in corvettes. His war experience provided the framework for the novel 'HMS Marlborough will enter Harbour', one of his best known books. 'The Cruel Sea' was made into a classic film starring Jack Hawkins. Established as a top name writer, Monsarrat's career concluded with 'The Master Mariner'. Interesting Story,

I saw the movie based on this book when I was a kid. I enjoyed the movie, and was very glad to get the book. The story brings up many interesting issues with regards to people with disabilities, especially hysterically induced disabilities which may be spontaneously reversed at some point. The issues here include exploitation of the handicapped, how this affects the relationships between the disabled and their caretakers, and the psychology of the caretakers themselves. A very interesting study in dependency, charity, exploitation, and the relationships between caretakers and those taken care of.
