Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Three relatively easy books on diverse subjects and of varying quality. The size of the type in these slim volumes gives the impression of simplicity, but the subjects are ambitious and the reading level not that low. The brief, chapterless format allows for only the most superficial coverage. The photographs and illustrations are mostly relevant but are ordinary. The Story of Harriet Beecher Stowe includes her inspirations for some of the ideas for Uncle Tom's Cabin. There are flaws: minor, annoying instances of fictionalization; an incomplete U. S. map that mentions but does not explain legislation regarding slavery; the inaccurate claim that Abraham Lincoln campaigned to free the slaves in 1860. However, this is still a useful book, with better quality illustrations than the other two and a lively text that presents Stowe's life in an interesting manner. The Story of Jonas Salk offers a rather dry account of the horrors of polio and Salk's work to find a polio vaccine. For slightly older readers, a more compelling account of Salk's fight can be found in a chapter of Melvin Berger's Famous Men of Modern Biology (Crowell, 1968; o.p.). The New York Stock Exchange is a good introduction to its background and current organization. Covering briefly the history of Wall Street from 1664 through the 1987 market crash, it gives a glimpse of how the NYSE has affected American history and vice versa. --Marilyn Long Graham, Jacksonville Public Libraries, FL

3.0 out of 5 stars There is a lack of explanation of exactly what stock is, July 30, 2008
This review is from: The Story of the New York Stock Exchange (Corner Stones of Freedom) (Library Binding)
If you keep even half an eye or ear tuned to the news, you cannot help but hear about the American stock market. Even children are exposed to this news, if only as a consequence of it being part of the environment. The phrase "Dow Jones" is heard on a regular basis and the behavior of the stock market affects the lives of everyone.

Given this background, every citizen should have some understanding of what the stock market is and this book is designed to do that. While it is excellent in giving the history of the market, it is weak in explaining exactly what stock in a company is. I could not find the word corporation in the index, which is a glaring omission. An additional two paragraphs explaining the concept of stock in a limited liability company would have done a great deal to improve the quality of the book.
