This review is from: A Story of a Forgotten Hero: Turning Back the Pages of Time (Hardcover)
Tippy Pendarvis has done something very few people accomplish in their lifetime; live 118 years. As a result of living such a long life, Tippy is a walking history book and somewhat of a celebrity in his community. He is a bit uncomfortable being in the spotlight, but agrees to allow a reporter to interview him. Unfortunately, just before the interview is to occur, Tippy has a heart attack, and it is obvious, at least to him, that his days are numbered. The race against his failing health is on as Tippy and his wife attempt to share his intriguing story which spans more than a century and includes encounters with the Klan, experience as a Buffalo Soldier, illegal businesses, love, and losses with the reporter.
A STORY OF A FORGOTTEN HERO is an entertaining tale that encompasses numerous aspects of African American history. Emerson Watkins has created richly crafted, well-rounded, and approachable characters who really help bring the story to life. The excessive details make the story drag a bit at moments, but from a historical standpoint, it adds additional depth and texture. Overall, A STORY OF A FORGOTTEN HERO is a well-written novel that strikes a good balance between fiction and history and is a pleasure to read. Reviewed by Stacey Seay of The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers |
