Book Description

May 2001
This reference book, brimming with 350 color photos of dolls made of china, bisque, wood, papier-mache', wax-over papier-mache', explains the tradition of 470 years of doll making in Germany. This informative resource tool brings German doll making to a personal level as the reader travels back in time and visits the workshops and factories relating to doll making of yesteryear. It shares documented stories of the home workers and the roles their families played in making dolls in the central area of Germany. The book documents many antique dolls never before identified from shards dug up at a number of old porcelain factories. Current pictures of Thuringian buildings provide a visual tour of important homes and factories relating to doll-making.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The focus of this book is the nearly 500-year-old history of doll making in central Germany, specifically in the state of Thuringia. The authors (both avid doll collectors and researchers) visited the workshops and factories in this region and describe in detail the many doll and porcelain factories there. Also discussed are the families who worked in the doll-making business and the surrounding communities. Many color photographs illustrate the types of dolls (china, bisque, wood, papier-m?ch?, and wax over papier-m?ch?) created in Thuringia, and the text details the process of doll making, including some excerpted historical accounts. The authors also discuss antique dolls they identified from shards excavated from German porcelain factory sites. This is not a price guide, but the historical information and 350 color photos should interest doll fanciers. For public libraries with a strong patron interest in the history of dolls.
