Smooth and smoky - Craig David plays it safe,
By Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Story Goes (Audio CD)
Englishman Craig David sticks to familiar hunting ground with "The Story Goes", his third album of R&B smoothies. Easy on the eyes with his arched eyebrows and carefully groomed facial hair, David also sounds as good as ever, particularly on the single "All the Way".
The best song on the album is "Don't Love You No More (I'm Sorry)", other picks being "One Last Dance" which reminds me of his hit song "Rise and Fall"; "Unbelievable"; "Do You Believe in Love" and "Hypnotic" Even though the album is packed with smooth R&B songs and one upbeat track "Just Chillin'", it would be nice if he would dig down to his Caribbean roots every once in a while (his father is Grenadian, his mother Jamaican) and produce some surprises. Still, one can never get too much of that sexy voice sending shivers up and down your spine. Amanda Richards, September 27, 2005

Craig David is back with more of an R&B groove,
This review is from: Story Goes (Audio CD)
Reminiscent of "Rendezvous", "Booty Man", "Key To My Heart", "What's Changed" and other slower songs, Craig David's new album "The Story Goes" reminds me of work by Brian McKnight, Jon B. and Babyface to name a few. The only faster songs are "All The Way" and "Just Chillin", David's most upbeat, danceworthy song on the album. His ballad, "Unbelievable" is very smooth and sincere, and slower than any other Craig song released on CD to date. Other noteworthy songs include "Hypnotic", a slow jam worth listening to when you're gettin' down with your hunny, "Separate Ways" that incorporates a sweet guitar melody, and "Thieves in the Night", an edgy song about his best friend stealing his woman. If you are looking for a more upbeat album with songs like "Fill Me In" and "What's Your Flava" this isn't it, but its still classic Craig and worth your time and money.

Solid Effort,
This review is from: Story Goes (Audio CD)
Craig's 3rd studio release is remarkable. His smooth, silky voice shines bright on these tracks. I love how there are no guests - it's all Craig at his best. The songs have great melodies and arrangments. His mid-tempo ballads, namly the innovative "Separate Ways" to the catchy, up-tempo songs like "Hypnotic," Craig is on top of his game. The lyrics were written with thought and creativity and the production is flawless. Two thumbs up to Mr. David. This CD will remain on my iPod and in my car constantly.

time for the greatest voice to get respect.......,

I live all the way on the Westside of America in California so you can imagine how hard it was to get this UK artist's CD. I was going to the record store every day demanding that they look in the back for it cus I knew it was out. I've been a Craig fan since "Fill me in" and it is amazing to watch this kid grow into a man. I'm so glad there is some new David songs he is the the greatest voice in the world! In my country there are hundreds of guy vocalists who get polished in the studio with their expensive producers or rely heavily on flashy dance numbers, but give Craig a stage and his accustic guitar player and its game over. Why does he get no respect in this country? No one can match his vocal talent. Ok, so now for the new cd.
This is a much more mature album. He wanted to show a lot more of his soulful side and depth on this one. No flavors of ice cream or spanish on this one. He also changed his sound a little by being really involved in production and co-writing all his own songs, which was a great idea. This Lp is my favorite to date and you just can't hate. Most A&R groups in America probly thought this CD lacked commercial play which is why it wasn't released here, but doesn't anybody here care about talent? I guess not. Breakdown of the tracks- All the Way- The 1st single, excelent song that makes you wanna call your friends and hit a club. Heard the Kardinal beats remix and wow, the track would blow away any of these lame singles in this country. Don't Love You no More- good song, seems he's admiting to the girl it's his fault and taking the blame. Seems like he doesn't really care. Hypnotic- one of my favorites, reminds me of hidden agenda, great chorus and hits a lot of good notes Seperate Ways- another good mutual break-up song. Is this cd based on a real-life break up?, hmmmm Johnny- Now this is a very well wrote, deep song, almost scary, I'm curious on who the song was written for or about. Do You Believe In Love- first of many sad tracks, he contimplates his belief in love while thinking about what love was like with her. Mark Hill produces a lot of nice tracks like this on the Cd One Last Dance- Wow now this is the Craig I know. Never have I felt such feeling in David's songs before. He just wants one more moment with her, the one he'd give it all up for. The chorus is by far best on album, nice work! strong vocals. Unbelievable- Ok, this is the one track where you might cry. This song sums up in whole what the feeling of love is. The greatest unbelivable feeling that makes you feel so lucky and fortunate to have. Love is fragile so take care of it! Most beautiful track on album. Just Chillin- track 9, no matter where you are from as an artist is where you put your track that will get people up and dancing again especially after geeting so deep into feelings and that love stuff. So forget the girl, hit the club and just chill. Thief In the Night- Alright now this is my pick. MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME! Thank you Craig for writing and producing your own song solo and getting it perfect. The vocals are amazing and the beat, instruments, melodies, everything is just classic Craig David all the way. I know everyone can relate to this song. Working late while your girl is out with your best friend. The things that go on in your head, its unexplainable. Jealousy, anger, dissapointment. Such a great track, so much feeling such a great voice. Nightime on the freeway track. Thank you, this is why I've been waiting years for this new Cd. Take Em Off- From the greatest to the runner-up, this track has girls all over taking it off. Throw this jam on when your girl is over and it's a sure thing. I've had "good times" with "Follow Me" and "Personal" but damn Craig you did it with this one! There will be a lot more babbies on the way this year. Craig shows his vocal range on this track and it really can never be matched. My Love Don't Stop- This is a real nice track, especially if you have that real close friend that you've been wanting to make a move on, but you're scared to lose the friendship. Never Should Have Walked Away- On this track track he contimplates his decision now that he's missin' her. He made mistakes, but he didn't know what was really going on. Let her go- Another really deep and beautiful song. Dedicated to his grandmother that passed he tries to help his mother and himself get through it by remembering the good times, knowing that she is in a better place and will always be looking down and watching. If you are like me and you have lost someone close this song will touch you deep down. My heart goes out to all the families who have lost someone. Keep your head up. So for all you Americans, Go get this album! Craig David always puts out good music that you can dance in the club, sing in the car, get busy in the bedroom, and cry in the rain to. This guy isn't your poppy, dancing, shirt-less, studio-polishied producer puppet. Craig David is a real artist with a real voice, so bow down to the king of R&B and go get this CD!

The musical journey continues,
By
This review is from: Story Goes (Audio CD)
Six years since his groundbreaking debut, one of Britain's hottest Urban exports Craig David returns with his latest offering - an autobiographical and personal album titled "The Story Goes". A spectacular debut can be a boon or a bane. While it definitely helps engrave a musician's position and significance in the world of music, it also lays the foundation for lofty and unrealistic expectations for future musical endeavors. It is the phenomenon that created the term "sophomore slump" - something Craig experienced with his last album "Slicker than your average". Yet, it has not deterred him and he is still possessed by the will to go on. His fans will be more than glad about this - especially given the results of his most recent effort, which while not stellar, are most certainly substantial.
On "The story goes", it appears that Craig has made a deliberate effort to focus almost exclusively on ballads. Some listeners might get the feeling that Craig has taken a "middle of the road safe" approach to most of these ballads making them sound like mainstream adult contemporary tracks. While most of them are not instant grabbers, their classic R&B vibes melted with Craig David's smooth voice most certainly have the potential to grow on listeners in a rather short span of time. The only exception to this is "Hypnotic" - Craig's strongest ballad to date - a magical ingredient to spice up a romantic evening. It is reason enough for listeners to give this album the chance it rightfully deserves. For those that equate Craig David with high-energy 2-step tracks, this album might not be all that they would have hoped for. The only track reminiscent of the 2-step style that Craig adopted on his successful debut "Born to Do It" is "All the Way" - a fun, light-hearted and exhilarating up-tempo track aimed at filling a dance floor. On the other hand, for those that associate Craig David with a powerful voice that keeps him miles ahead of the rest of his R&B contemporaries, this just might be the album they have been secretly waiting for. Delivering clear-cut verdicts on an album such as this might not be as easy as one would hope for since it does not match the standards of the highly successful "Born to Do it" but most certainly provides glimpses for a long musical future for the exceptionally talented Craig David. It deserves a fair chance. Songs for the casual listener: Hypnotic Songs for the Craig David fan: All the way, Hypnotic, My Love don't stop

I recently downloaded Craig David's 3rd album from iTunes for less than 10 bucks. The album contains 14 tracks which range from "club" music to R&B with a little soul thrown in. This turned out to be an exceptional album and I feel like I've gotten some worth out of it already. This album sounds similar to his first album, "Born To Do It", released back in 2001. I discovered Craig David after hearing the song "Fill Me In". I downloaded a few songs and eventually bought the album. This was a time when I was in my first major consulting position and I was traveling to downtown Cincinnati everyday. The commute was long and boring but this album kept me dancin' in the car! His second album was very similar to the first and seemed "overdone". It was almost like he was trying too hard. There were few mainstream songs and it was mostly full of club/dance mixes. This album focuses on R&B smooth rythyms and his smooth voice. The following is rundown of each song. <ul> <ul> <li><strong><u>All The Way</u></strong> - it's one of those "going out, club hoppin'" songs. Good beat and makes me feel like it's summertime for some reason </li> <li><strong><u>Don't Love You No More</u></strong> - Great song, sad subject! It's about realizing that you no longer love someone in a relationship. Great chorus and one of my favorites on the album. Probably a good choice for radio.</li> <li><strong><u>Hypnotic</u></strong> - Another "club hoppin'" song about meeting the shorties at the bar....LOL, I'm not very good with the jive talk.</li> <li><strong><u>Separate Ways</u></strong> - Another break-up song where the love is gone and compromise cannot be found. A tale about immature love, cheating, and lack of trust.</li> <li><strong><u>Johnny</u></strong> - Very interesting song...doesn't fit with the rest of the album. It's about a kid who gets abused everyday by the school bully. He's afraid to tell his parents and teachers. Kinda sad, actually.</li> <li><strong><u>Do You Believe In Love</u></strong> - Yes, I believe in love... Slow tempo, good showcase of his voice and mix of styles</li> <li><strong><u>One Last Dance</u></strong> - Again, he is singing about breaking up and moving on past a stormy relationship.</li> <li><strong><u>Unbelievable</u></strong> - Another great showcase of Craig's voice. This is the typical love song with low beats, a dropped band giving it an almost acoustic setting. Another of my favorites.</li> <li><strong><u>Just Chillin'</u></strong> - Fast paced, more of a club song. One of the few songs on this album that I don't care for.</li> <li><strong><u>Thief In The Night</u></strong> - Original title with dark theme...About a guy's girl cheating with his best friend. He sings about how they both let him down. He should be out kickin' butt instead of singing! LOL</li> <li><strong><u>Take `Em Off</u></strong> - Definetly reserved for the bedroom setting. Sexy song about foreplay and you guessed it....</li> <li><strong><u>My Love Don't Stop</u></strong> - A mid-tempo about hooking up with a childhood friend. </li> <li><strong><u>Never Should Have Walked Away</u></strong> - Sad tale about lost love and mistakes made and admitted guilt. Good flow on this song...</li> <li><u><strong>Let Her Go</strong></u><strong><em> - </em></strong>Different vocal approach here.....preaching about letting someone go when it's done. I think we've all been here and needed to here this. One of my favorites.</li></ul></ul>

I didnt even need to hear the first single "All The Way" to know that i was going to enjoy another fine album from one of the premier artists out there Craig David. "Story Goes" does have a more decided straight up R&B feel to it and not a whole lot of the 2 step that i'm used to. But this isnt really a bad thing, because Craig goes from song to song with such ease that it doesnt even matter to me. Slow jams, midtempo, uptempo songs they are all here for anyone that has been a fan of Craig David or is remotely curious. You should give "Story Goes" a chance i can safely say that you won't be disappointed. Much success with this album to Craig and all future projects as well. Peace!!

What can I say about Craig David except that to me he IS the only definition of TRUE R&B music. His lyrics and vocals on this album are outstanding. I have to give you a little insight to my primary likes in music. I am a metal head all the way and even the sound of R&B makes me want to vomit, but this guy is the real deal. He really knows how to make great R&B music. Not like most of the R&B artists today that just get behind the mic and do that damn annoying off rythm up and down vocals. Just sing the song damn it....don't really care how many notes you can hit. This guy is the shot and coming from a metal head...that HAS to mean something.
