This review is from: So the Story Goes: Photographs by Tina Barney, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and Larry Sultan (Art Institute of Chicago) (Paperback)
This book contains absolutely splendid photographs. The images, created by quite prolific photographers, show an intimacy that is quite moving. They are family photographs. I recommend considering how these photographs look and what they are showing, and comparing that with the aesthetic and cultural significance of the family snapshot. What are the differences? What is the same?
As a student of photography, a few of the images in this book are so good, they make me say, "ok... I quit."

I saw this exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago several years ago. Some of the images stayed with me and I was happy to see this book available on Amazon. Viewing art is always better in person but this book has beautiful reproductions of the exhibition prints. Larry Sultan's images, in particular, reveal the power of photography in documenting seemingly ordinary moments. His use of color, light and composition in a quiet yet profound way is an inspiration. He unfortunately died of cancer last year and will be missed.
