After wandering among Helen's Bavarian buildings and perhaps enjoying the revelry of Oktoberfest, many visitors naturally ask how Helen became "Georgia's Alpine Village". There's a tale behind the architecture, of course, and it is recounted here. And from even earlier times, little remains in modern Helen to suggest that Main Street follows the route of an ancient Indian trading path, that pioneers once labored here to claim fields from a mountain wilderness, or that the shrieking whistles of trains and the belching smokestacks of a huge sawmill shaped valley life in an age of steam. Although the great Georgia Gold Rush overturned the valley floors and left scars on the surrounding hillsides, it's not generally recognized that the Helen area saw as much prospecting and speculation as any other part of the Georgia gold region. Together, these events are The Story of Helen. With over 90 pictures and illustrations, the book is also a guide to numerous shopping, natural, and historical attractions in the area.
